adamb20 22
was out today with my lurcher shes about 7 months old. now i know they say not to start them young but she chased a rabbit on her own accord should i stop this or just let her carry on cheers rob All depends on what your doing with her and what way she is bred, some breeds mature mentally and physically before larger breeds, dont rush with her at 7 months, let her see the rabbits, if you can take her out with ferrets and mooch the sets, see rabbits bolting and hold them in the net, this will help her settle, dont over do chasing, she has to develope her bone and muscle, pick what you can for her. I started my little bitch gradually at 10 months, ferreting , until the penny had dropped, which was within an hour, next trip took her where there was myxy and let her hunt up, it stacked the odds in her favour, she caught ten in over an hour, because she was catching fairly easy it encouraged her all the more but she does have high prey drive which helps. Take your time no rush, dont spoil your lurcher for the sake of dying to get started, all the best, good luck WR Bitch 11 month with her first ten. loos a bit like my beddi whip collie grey bitch that mate, what way it bread, cheers. 3 Turns 326
letting her chase to many rabbits without her catching will put her of, after a while of doing this she will stop chasing as she knows she won't catch, is there anywhere you can take her where there is no rabbits? Absolute nonsense, never heard such twoddle before, it's perfectly normal for puppies to chase large numbers of rabbits before they catch one and I have never known one in the least put off by this. rabbit mad 10
when you go ferreting keep a live one back and let the dog have a course in the middle of a big field.once it get one there's no stopping it. Quote Link to post
saxonmaster 74
alright mate got my boy at 5 months old and he had never seen anything he never even wore a collar before and he is 13 months old now. once i got the basic training to a good standard at about 7 months i would let him free run and if he seen rabbits if they popped out he would chase and he obviously missed them when they turned into cover he kept on running straight. never put him off mate and i just used all this with his obedience training the wait command and recall and so on. now i ferret with him and on sunday had something bigger 1st time and had his first rabbit on the lamp wednesday night which was his 2nd time out and his 3rd ever slip. but every dog is differnt and my advice is go with the flow mate dont force the dog only you know when its ready. quick thanks to stroller for advice when i needed it cheers mate.
