tango 221
Came home this evening and went round to the ferret shed to check them,in it is two hobs and a jill, the black eyed white hob and poley jill were not there or so i thought,i started to search round the yard through the dog pens and boxes and nothing, then i went back to the shed a half hour later and the white hob was there.scratched the head a minute,i cant see up into one of the bedding boxes from outside so i climbed in and up in the box was the jill, stone dead with her chest ate.the white hob was obviously in there with her so it must have been him, when i lifted her she was still slightly warm and wasnt stiff but there wasnt any blood on his nose or anywhere.the jill is in there with him since she was around 12 weeks and he has never done any harm to her.never ever heard of this before ,has anyone...in the run they have a stainless dog dish that is always full of alpha ferret food and they have two water bottles, Quote Link to post
Rake aboot 4,936
Aye have seen this in ferrets that I have rescued before. not pleasnt but then jill eat kits all the time. Cannabalism occurs in lots of species in the wild,, so I wouldn`t hate the wee thing for it !! The ferret I got had been starved though,, but perhaps a fight gone too far ?? ATB Quote Link to post

I,ll put it another way,the hob doesn,t think like a human being its a ferret, Ferrets are by nature solitary animals, when kept together unfortunately situations can and do arise, and the week will be the first to suffer, survival of the fittest, saying this good animal husbandry will often prevent these situations getting out of control, Quote Link to post

Roxy go home, youve had enough! Ferrets certainly ARE NOT solitary animals, they love and even need company, a ferret kept alone is a very sad thing. Quote Link to post

I am home mate, ferrets are bred from wild european polecats,do you see them living in packs like dogs etc?NO!The only time a wild female polecat will seek contact with a male is when mating occurs. We have to a degree, domesticated them though and if they are well looked after they do co exist quite happily, however sometimes problems can and do arise. Its the same with all animals kept in captivity, Quote Link to post

FightTheBan 1,147
I once had a tiny polecat jill that was ganged up on by my other jills. If I had not separated them they would almost certainly have killed her. FTB Quote Link to post
