Yes Dean i went Lamping with Mike Brown when Sooty Sam was a very young dog he was a cracking working whippet i also sold Mike a very good working bitch from the mating he produced a dog called what's behind the mask who needs no introduction to anyone who knows about coursing whippets i also new mike before he had whippets many moons ago now

Can you tell us Tina how long you have had Pedigree whippets & how many sooty sam bred whippets you have worked shown coursed or lure coursed?

I don't see the revelance of your question PW? what has what I've got or how long I've owned these type of dogs got to do with the posters question?

he asked about Gelert and Sooty Sam, not about my dogs!

Just wondered as you seem to be very protective of the line, This line does not suit everyone it suits me & i have 6 from this line which i do Show/race/work & lure course & there for know the qualities & limitations, regarding the size 21 inch to the shoulder is the height limit & 32lbs is the weight limit for racing

Pennymeadow Blackjack is line bred to Sooty Sam & is 21.25 inch at the shoulder & 35lbs as i said some of the dogs in this line are oversized but that does not stop them working

Sooty Sam ~ As far as i'm aware never actualy raced (or at least didnt race under WCRA rules) as he was I believe approximatly 22" the hight limit in pedigree racing being 21".

As far as i'm aware he never coursed under National Whippet Coursing club rules as again the hight limit is 20" for that (Dogs/Bitch's) so he'd of been excluded due to his hight.

But I know he was a very very good working dog to all quarry as i've spoken to a lot of lads who had seen him work day/night.

Sooty Sam has produced some outstanding working dogs and as P/M has stated was the sire of "whats behind the mask" the best dog i've ever seen on the coursing field (under rules) although in saying that he only appeard once in this dogs pedigree.

Flaming Floyed, (19 1/2") his owner on another site wrote that he'd had a few runs at a non ped club ( Horspath/Cowley) but due to family i'llness he'd never realy raced proper and that again due to family i'llness had never coursed under rules.

Heres a link to the other site and what the owner wrote ~ Flaming Floydes details by the owner

I've seen the name from time to time, so thought I'd ask. I'm getting a lurcher pup off Laguna whippet lines over a Hancock lurcher bitch. Hoping for the best and like to know about the dogs and lines in general.

Flaming Floyed...had a few runs at a non ped club ( Horspath/Cowley) but due to family i'llness he'd never realy raced proper and that again due to family i'llness had never coursed under rules.

Just to put things straight, I had intended to course him, but he finished up at just over 20" and we didn't have the time to spare. We ran at the Ped club at South Oxford, he did quite well at bend racing but not straight, so we've only done lurecoursing since then, with 1 BIF and 2x res. BIFs against much younger dogs at BSFA in 2005. He's done consistently very well at this, against dogs that have previously won stakes with the WCC.

His niece (out of his litter-sister by a Bluestreak dog) has done well at racing - in fact I think she was in a dead heat with one bred by you Mark, at the Indy Open? ;) Dunno how Gelert would do at racing now, but he managed 17.50 secs over 250 yds at the Bicester track this summer, not too bad for a 7 yr old recovering from a broken toe.

I'd agree they will not have the speed to keep up with many racing-bred dogs, but they have great determination, drive and intelligence. If you want to see the ability of pure Laguna x Sooty Sam whippets, come down here as currently the best drag-coursing dogs running at various events are Gelert's half-nieces by Nipalong Hopalong out of a Sooty Sam bitch. Pure Lagunas, bred by Lilah herself, are considerably smaller/lighter than the working strains based on this line bred by others.
