Another decent night

Recommended Posts

Had a call from Scoop n Dig from in here to see if I fancied a night on the bunnies. So we agreed to meet up after I had a go at taking care of a nuisance fox that had been snooping around a farmer friend of ours who keeps hens. This farm has been a mecca for foxes over the years and we have had to work hard at keeping the numbers down.

So set of with Keano and took the dogs just to cover any potential mishaps. The foxes have been coming increasingly lampshy and difficult to call in around this area so we wern't really expecting to get a shot at anything. Quick shine around the field and a pair of orange eyes lit up at the other end of the field.

A few squeaks and the fox showed some interest and began sniffing the air and started making its way towards us slowly. The wind by this time had begun kicking up and made our red visitor even more cautious and wary. 20minutes or so later he was about 100yrds from us but some crates and stuff prevented a clear shot. Suddenly the fox stopped again sniffing the air trying to locate where the squeal was coming from.

Something seemed to spook him and he about turned and went back the way he came but only went a short distance before curiosity took hold and he began working around us. We were able to reposition ourselves and worked out the best place to wait. Within a couple of minutes he was close enough for a shot and Keano took him out. Sent Keano's big white dog out to retrieve and he did a fine job. So job done I headed over to pick Scoop up and we drove to our destination.

When we got there the wind was really blowing hard and we were anticipating a good night. As we got further into the ground we were seeing very few bunnies and the ones we did see were sitting at the edge of the fence in relative safety.

Moving further up we decided to spilt up to increase our chances of getting a run. After an hour I had one rabbit to show for my trouble and thinking things wern't going to get any better.

Up ahead of me I could see Scoop lamping quite bit in front of me and I thought christ he's fast. So I walked up to see how he was getting on and found to my surprise it wasn't him but an old guy with 3 dogs and he was coming back from the direction I was heading. So after a quick chinwag I had established how far up he had gone. Had a quick chat with Scoop and we decided to carry on given the strength of the wind.

Luckily things worked out reasonably ok and we managed to bag 17 between us 7 to his young beddy x and 10 to my collie x.

Sorry about the pics no camera only had the phone.
