Guest Lurchers2006
How do you normally get your dogs taking squaters? My pup has had about bunnies now but is running over squaters!! Should i keep walking him upto these or try slipping him and hope he sees them? Quote Link to post

snoopdog 1,256
what you have to do is get your dog to trust theres somthing at the end of the beam evertime ..what i tend to do is at first is to walk up slowly keeping the beam on the rabbit as you get closer hold your lamp higer so the beam is only lighting the rabbit up and not behind the rabbit..i.e. then its not lighting the field behind it somtimes just in front of the bunny the dog looks where the beam ends ....keep doing this and he will get the hang of it ..it takes time ...thats how i do it and it works for me...people lamp in different ways... i just kept slipping mine and she picked it up after abit dont know if this is the right way but it worked for me mate hope this helps not saying your wrong my mate .. but if he keeps slipping it it may run over the bunny if it sits tight ..then it can loose trust ..if you walk up to tne bunny it will either bolt or you can show it to the dog flick it with your foot... mabye iam wrong what the fook do i know... Quote Link to post
towzer 3
spot on snoopdog thats exactly to the word how i was taught mate Quote Link to post
juckler123 707
get the dog used to lamping without a slip lead it might be a bit chaotic at first but they soon settle down and follow the beam then just walk on the squatters and dont shout the dog on let it get used to em with no encouragement its a lot easier lamping with the dog off the lead Quote Link to post

dickyboy 1
to speed up the process i covered some dummies with skins and let him watch my mate throw them down the beam. then on short grass like a football pitch/park i would throw 3 or 4 out leave that field and come back 5 min later when he's forgotten the n lamp them from 20 yards or so! i found it helped him put 2 and 2 together so he knows he has to rtrieve something from the end of the beam everytime and sometimes it doesn't move it also taught him on longer grass to hunt around the area where the beam ends till he finds it.......then well down the line he's starting to click!!!! but apart from that same as snoopdog!!! Guest JOEB
I dont walk up on squatters, I just keep working em on the lamp and if the dog will run the beam it will eventually get the idea.....lots of dogs run over the top, dont worry about it, it will come. Keep at em J Quote Link to post
