Born Hunter 17,763
I have been waiting for this book to be published since the day I first heard of it being written. The lurcherman’s bookshelf is seriously lacking in quality advice and knowledge in literature on treating working injuries, illness, feeding, fitness, kennelling and general maintenance of our hounds. The book was waiting for me on the kitchen table a couple of days ago now and my initial flick through gave a good first impression, hard backed, colour photos, many explicit injury photos and well defined chapters. I haven’t yet fully read the book (it’s quite a book, 220+ pages), having read the areas of particular interest first. Penny’s writing style is very relaxed and down to earth, it’s not a book written by a scientist or a vet, reading this book is like talking to the experienced dogman/women all of us should have the privilege of knowing to help us in our times of need with our much loved passion of lurchers and working them. The internet is great for advice on this sorta stuff but I’m sure I’m not alone when I say it all gets bloody confusing with so many different opinions and lack of actually being able to see how bad an injury has to be to take a certain course of action. The pictures and captions in this book really make it, showing injuries I’ve seen myself and some I hope I won’t be seeing all that often. Lads that have been in the game for years and have had the privilege of having experienced sensible dogmen on hand to help them when needed will probably read this book and be quite familiar with many of the topics mentioned. Still this book would provide a good reference and peace of mind that you know exactly what to do in the field or at home when things take an often bloody turn for the worse with ya mutts. That said, my copy is already on ‘loaning order’ to the few lifelong dogmen I have the privilege of knowing, as they are sensible enough to know that they are always able to learn something new and improve on what they already do know. If you have ever found yourself unsure about anything to do with what I have mentioned and find yourself looking on here about your lurchers (or indeed any working breed of dog) health/fitness issues then buy this book. You will learn a hell of a lot, save yourself god knows how much in vets fees, give yourself peace of mind, give your dogs the best chance you can health wise and feel pride in knowing you at least have the foundations of a good dogman. This book is long overdue and will hopefully improve the lives of our dogs that give us so much in the field…
J Darcy 5,871
Had a look at this book at the weekend, looks a very nice addition to anyones running dog library. I think Santa will be bringing me mine. Lots of photos and just about everything that can go wrong with a running dog detailed. Well Done with your first book Skycat
