stevie67 42
hi all would like some advice on my 15 month patterdale, i have her and a 3 year old lakiexborder whose a cracking digging dog, this is only my second season digging but had dogs and hunted lots of game all my life. since the end of august i have had 12 succesfull digs to my lakie and the we pat has seen them all and from the first one shes mad for action, ive let her in everytime for a few minutes when ive opened up and she does well. i thought i would give her a chance yesterday in some handy earths and the second one i checked was occupied, a single holer, she entered and 5 meters in started baying, 20 seconds later she came out saw me and ran back in. this time she went to 13 meters found her quarry and started baying, within a minute she was back out so collor went on lakie snd i dug it. my question is should i continue to take her out,or should i hold her back for a we while. ive had mixed comments from a few old diggin men i no so i thought id put it to you guys. the dog is well bred from worker to worker so just wana do the right thing cos this we dog is crackers for it. all comments appreciated. Guest busterdog
Don't be in a rush to put the collar on another dog, give it plenty of time to work things out for itself, they don't learn nothing in a terrier box or in a stop end. Try it on it's own next time and if at first it loses the game then just sit back and ignore it for a while an see if it wonders back in and has a think about what whent wrong. Quote Link to post
dog fox 16
you showed her too may stop ends pal i reckon ,she only wants pockets and doesnt want to work her quarry for a full dig.Just my opinion pal i.ll go with scent on this one ,i had a beddy x pat few years back now . i showed her a couple at a young age in a stop end and totaly fecked her up ,you would enter the terrier and she would find and settle down to work ,didnt matter how long you left her she would work her game and stay but as soon as you started digging and she could hear you on top she would come out and stand next to you looking into the dig ,my terriers always go in the front door now and are dug out simples as that ,some dogs are a lot cleverer than others and dosnt take much for the dog to think its doing right ,weather it is or not Quote Link to post
