My Old BSA Mercury S .177 Fitted with a Tasco fixed 2.75x40 scope :notworthy:. I mopped up alot of vermin with this rifle 1980-83.

my best pal who I used to shoot with took his own life by hanging in the local subway near to him in 83, when I attended the funeral as expected his younger brother took it really bad and was pretty broken up, one evening to help him through his grief I jumped on my Cowhorn push bike and and rode round his to give him my gun I know he loved.

the funny thing is another pal a couple of years back found out where is was and brought it round for me to look at, I obviously wanted it for sentimental reasons but the guy wanted £250 for it :icon_eek:, I was gutted and declined but was a bit sad when he took it away with him again.

I fitted a PTFE washer from Terry Robb in this gun, a white spacer in the recoil pad plus sling and swivels and all was still there many years later when he brought it round ..

these are the pictures I took before it went back

Hello Jasp.

My goodness what a remarkable story behind a remarkable air rifle. From what I can see from your pictures this Mercury has been well looked after generally, with some degree of handling wear on the barrel. It was a fantastic rifle the BSA Mercury and, to my eye, it was the nicer of the breed with it's sister the Airsporter underlever.

It would have been something to hear how well it shot after so many years but, I reckon it would hold it's own very well with anything out there now, no problem.

Maybe you could get the guy back and talk him into an offer? It would be great to see you get it back Jasper mate, as there is a lot of past-significances invested in it for you?

Thanks for sharing this

All the best

Hello Simon

I remember picking this gun up from the local Gunsmith after reading a glowing report about it on test in Airgun World, don't quote me on this as my memory isn't perfect these days but I think they recorded it back then spitting out Eley Wasps at around 875FPS.

I traded in a BSA Super Meteor and a standard BSA Mercury paired up with a Original 4x32 scope plus £30 odd quid, The Mercury S was amazing with its 12 Groove Barrel, I also had a MK1 Airsporter S in .177 which came in from a Gun dealer back then in Lowerstoft! this was a lovely gun too but a bit heavy for my liking plus it was a nightmare dropping pellets in the tap when it was dark.

The Guy who now owns the Mercury S is a guy I also knew all them years ago, the gun was sold on to him and he has kept it ever since, trust me it looks better in the pictures than it is in the flesh! it could now do with Re-blueing but apart from that it still had plenty of power and shot true, the price was a bit steep but I certainly would have paid £150 for it but unfortunatly it was a no no.

Interesting notes on Gunpower Stealth from Basejumper  who misses his and benji benji  who clearly hated the one he had. I've heard this gun is one you either love or loathe and here's proof it seems. :notworthy::wallbash:

Andy pal, that's so true mate. The rifles I have are all getting on now but, I'll never part with them for anything. They have survived one mad wife, three bitches and a couple of cows in the time I've had them. My partner Jo is great; she never stops me from getting off to go shooting whenever I want to, consequently I'll do anything she wants help with or needs. That career 707 was one pcp I nearly bought. I bought the TX200 pair that I have now instead.

Sean hi mate. I was wondering when a BSA airsporter would come up the list. I never had one but I knew a few who did. All of them regret letting that one go. I was at Guns International, Barnsley yesterday as Karl the owner and friend is retiring and selling-up (Got a further couple of great Hawke scope bargains) There was a chap with an absolutely mint Airsporter underlever getting a new cocking pivot fitted. He's had it from new since the mid 1970s and absolutely loves it still. Strange how plain it looks today. It seemed really sleek and purposeful when it came out.

Hang on to that Relum Sport. Your mum must have happily smoked a warehouseful of players No 6 cigarettes to get you that rifle with the coupons. That's a nice bit of social history!.

Simon

It was freakin radical-lookin' like a bloody triple O/U shotgun on steroids but man, they were powerful and accurate, whether on FAC or sub12.

that mate it was and with the engraveing on the side to. twin air cilinders barrel on top. winchester underleaver loading from the in-line ten shot mag adjustable power. beuftifull,

god dam you, now i regret it even more...lol.

true what you say about the stelth tho mate either love em or hate em.

:whistling::tongue2: LOL!! Cheers mate. But Andy, there were three Career rifles including an ultra short carbine version that caused a stir when they first started selling well over here around 1999/2000 and every other shooter wanted one. Karl Slater at Guns International was selling them like hot cakes. He even showed me a long-barreled 8mm FAC mega-version. :icon_eek: But I wasn't buying. Then PUFF! They disappeared from fashion and the more conventional air weapons carry on. I think there is a cult following for them now but, I haven't seen them on the shelves for some time.

Must admit I'd like a shot or two with one; 'see what the fuss was all about

Cheers mate. Next time hang on to em, like that great HW90 of yours!

yes wish id had hung onto it. think if my memory is correct myn was 12flb mk1 career 707 carbine. they did make the 9mm single shot version looked a bit different to the 707's. must have been around 2001 when i had it.

you can still find them around, but most of the ones iv seen in the shops are tending to be the fac versions.

and dont worrie the hw is still with me.

it was awsome to shoot the winchester action ment you could have ten very rapid shots without ever having to take you eye off the target.

it was just the way the gun made you feel when getting it out and shooting it, still makes me tingle.

Hi Davy,

I used to have a SP50, my mate had a GAT, we used to argue like cat and dog which was the better, it culminated in a shoot off!!! Pleased to say the SP50 came out on top :toast:

Probably still knocking about at my mums, will have to try and dig it out.

I would love all my childhood airguns back I used to have a [bANNED TEXT] ball with them. A Relum Tornado, brute of a rifle. Daisy 922 pump, deadly accurate and with open sites, accounted for many rabbits. And an old Meteor my dad picked up from a car boot. My first scoped rifle and again accounted for many vermin....... ah Im all reminicent now

Gosh Davy what an amazing looking HW100 and scope! Was this a special Hydro dip job you had done? Looks brilliant. Amazing bag of rabbits by the way. I'll never know what it would take for me to part with such a rifle! Cheers mate

Mikey, I have an air rifle pellet lodged in my left cheek that's been there for over 40 years :icon_eek: . It's a .22 Milbro pellet and it was fired by my idiot of a cousin with a RELUM TORNADO he had. The doc said it would work itself out if it was still in. It hasn't and I can still feel it in my left cheek; 1-inch below my left eye. My Aunt, his mum, got him it from her catologue! Thank F***k they were not that powerful!

I'm so glad I started this thread. It's quite a remarkable collection of "lost souls" adding up.

I can add a lovely little Webley Excel .22 from about 2001 I had. I had a Theoben Gas Ram fitted to it and it was a beautiful, sweet-shooting little rifle on Eley Wasps and a potent ferral pidgeon and rat stopper. I traded it for my TX200 but regretted it going.

I've vowed that any rifle I buy, if I love it, I will never let it go. It will always be missed if I do.

Cheers

Simon
