DRP 3
I live in the UAE and let me tell you that the stamina of these working Saluki is incredible. Hunting is illegal here so people either travel to Saudi or Egypt. Wild stocks are not completely depleted in the Gulf. Wether these were droppers in the vids or not, I don't know, but these dogs can move! For the guy who had a Patrol in Oz, yup!!! I've got a Capsula, theres Nothing better for the desert than the Patrol, but god, do they drink!! Lol. Heres a little pic of me and Hamad Al Ghanem. Quote Link to post
CarraghsGem 92
excellent vid, wish there was the land round here for a dog like that! Quote Link to post
BOLIO1 1,078
It's unfair to compare dogs when they're running different quarry. Whether or not there are a lot of turns in a course depends upon the evasion tactics of the prey, not the dog. It would seem that gazelle are speed and endurance specialists an don't have the hare's manoeverability at close quarters. I wouldn't be so daft as to call these salukis plodders since I haven't seen any other types run behind a gazelle for comparison. I think a lot of the other lurcher crosses would find that the gazelle was running away from them before long especially with those long slips, and then they'd pull up. Whilst it rubs against the grain to see so many dogs slipped at one dropped gazelle (even if most are pups) it's their land and their sport and they know what they need to do to get runs and training for their dogs. I wouldn't presume to tell a sled dog man how to train his dogs for the Iditterod.....or even how to spell the darn thing! Quote Link to post
riohog 5,729
yeah it does seem strange to see 10/15 dogs chasing a gazzell... but only the very best have the stamina to keep up and make a kill, and thagt aint many after 2,,3 miles in 40 + degree heat!! Quote Link to post

Natural selection and selective breeding, mate ! There's some wide open spaces out there in the Middle East, nothing for as far as the eye can see. A dog needs speed to get up on it's quarry and stamina to keep up with it. I'd imagine the wild dogs that were the forebears to the Saluki had survival of the fittest and when the Beduins breed them, looks don't come into it, best to the best and ruthless culling. I asked Sheik Hamed if he prefered Feathered or Smooth; he looked at me and said coat and colour mean nothing..it's how they perform that decides if they are good enough to breed Cheers.
