The notion that the work gene washes out of terriers quickly is not well proved. What is well proved is that KC people rarely work their dogs and because they breed for head form above all else (head shape and size is more imortant than anything else in most KC terrier breed standards) they generally breed a dog that ends up too large in the chest. Chest size is what has killed most KC terriers. Get a proper-sized dog in the hands of a person who will actually take the dog out digging quite a lot (a dog is not made in a day) and you may have a very good thing. The fact that this is so rare, speaks volumes about the people attracted to the Kennel Club, and also speaks volumes about the size of so many of the dogs you find there. A rare thing times a rare thing is a very rare thing indeed.
