ooo get you what do a lot of lurchers have in there breeding ? none of my collies are chained to the kennel, any dog can be a sheep killer.

Yes, i understand that any dog can be a killer... Collies aremore probarble as they are in close contact with sheep all the time... one of my lurchers has beardie in him... but he is still a lurcher... he chases things, doesnt go out rounding sheep up... Atb anyway Russ.

She was trying it on pal. Did you hear her rag a sheep. If not she was playing(as pups do). Have you ever let her off in the dark before? The dog did need telling when you caught up with it. And tghe way you do that is up to you. A good scruffing wouldnt have gone a miss.....You have to be ready for all situTions. Get her amongst them in the daytime again...

p.s. what kind of dog is it?

You should never bollock a dog when it has come to you, no matter how tempting.

But if you have to go TO the dog then a bollocking and scruffing is defenitly required!

Get it on a long lead andd try again, failing that put the dog in a pen with a hornless ram in it! I doubt it would look at another sheep again. :whistling:

It wasn't playing with them when chasing the sheep :wallbash:

The lad said the dog came to him, hence no bollocking should have been given, and the ram thing don't always work, seen a dog put with a ram, with horns, get a right hammering, it pulled a ewe down on the way home !

All due respect, but I did say that she didn't come straight back to me like she usually does. Not splitting hairs as I asked for your advice and I appreciate your input but, I did say this.

Thanks

I use the long line idea when taking a pup in with sheep, i also put it on the lead and tie it up to the fence. If you walk away about 30yds the sheep will usually crowd around the pup and it will get used to them.I do this for a few weeks then try the pup out, being off the lead. I like to try and find some sheep that are in a small field that has a public footpath running through it, that way the sheep are usually used with dogs so are not inclined to run which might make the pup want to chase them (it thinks it is playing). Also if it is a small field and it goes wrong you will be able to get the pup back easier. This is just my personal opinion.

ALRIGHT MATE JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS BUT DONT PANIC TOO SOON EASY FIX. KEEP FAMILIARISING YOUR PUP WITH THE SHEEP.IF YOU CAN FIND A FARMER WHO U TALK TO AND ASK HOW HE CALLS THE SHEEP TO GET THERE PELLETS .SHEEP ARE RECALLED LIKE DOGS WE PUT PELLETS IN A BUCKET AND SHAKE IT WHILE CALLING ZIG ZIGZIG REAPEATEDLY THE SHEEP ALL COME TO THE TROUGH WETHER THE DOGS ARE THERE OR NOT .FIND OUT THE CALL IF YOU CAN . PUT SOME GRAVEL IN A SMALL PLASTIC BOTTLE AND SHAKE GO IN THE FIELD IF THE DOG LOOKS INTERESTED CONSTANTLY SAY NO. THE DOG WILL START TO LOSE ALL INTEREST DO THIS REGUARLY EVENTUALLY THE DOG WONT EVEN LOOK AT THEM.I BREAK ALL MY DOGS AT THE FAMILY FARM BUT I DO IT IN A PEN.DONT LOOSE FAITH IN UR WEE DOG .GOOD LUCK

Yes the may have been playing but if the farmer had come along he would have had the right to shoot that dog playing or not, playing turns in to attcking, i would go for the long rope first thats what we do with our collies while training and if that dont work and you are at a loss try a leccie collar but must be used in the proper manner

Alurcher isnt a collie, a lurcher is a hunting dog, a collie a herding dog... my father has had collies all his life....

Any farmer will tell you that one of the biggest sheep killer is as working collie... turn your back on them, and they will be off...

most farm collies are chained to there kennels. lurchers arent...

How many lurchers have you stock broken...

Spot on RFYL.We had a Collie Bitch on the Farm that Didn't bother the Sheep but Worried Sheep on the Neighbouring Farm.Imo Collie Blooded Lurchers need more Contact with Livestock than any other Cross.
