The other side of the hedge

Recommended Posts

Due to being skint and having to work more or less 7 days a week i havent had the little dog out much. But Sunday morning i had literally 2 hours to spare before i had to be back home to spend the day with the missus and some friends on an organised walk.It takes 30mins to get to the place i wanted to try so i had literally an hour to ferret a few holes which was risky to start with if i had a lie up i was f****d!!

The fields were bouncing with rabbits and the little dog had a few runs and got close once but the rabbits were playing with her they see my mate and his collie every day so they arent shy.

Got maggie in and i tried a little 3 hole set she was marking in the next field over without nets hoping for a long run back to the field i had come from. put the little silver jill in and 10 seconds later the sounds of a ferret getting beaten up came from a bank top hole. maggie ran in head down the bury and pulled out a big old buck rabbit.

so far so good next onto a hedge row set i set a few nets most of the holes wher on my side but there was a bolt hole on the other which i netted so off in the two ferrets this time and a long wait with thumping and scurrying all over the set, eventually a creeping bolt into the net on the far side maggie saw this and had a clear run through the hedge to pin the net but decided to run around the side of the hedge and try to get through a fence to cut the rabbit off by the time she managed this the rabbit was out of the net and away it turned into a long run on a short field but she did turn it off a hedge and lost it in a pile of logs which she hit with her head bit of a scary moment but she was ok.

she came back in and i sent her onto the other side of the hedge to gaurd the bolt hole she hadnt done this before and came back a couple of times but she eventually figured out what i wanted and stood tight she could see me through the hedge so that made it easier for her to see the wait hand signal. sods law and a rabbit bolted my side and into the bury next door out came the ferrets and i had tme for one last set.

walked across to an easy 4 holer maggie ran straight past the set and marked at the next set but i was in a rush so chose to ignore her and set the nets called her in and put the ferret down the little jill knows if there is a rabbit in and doesnt mess about she went in and straight back out maggie was right and the big white hunter was wrong funny how we can ignore the training and instincts of our dogs sometimes.

the little dog is 19 or 20 months old now and hadnt been out for 6 weeks i reckon she is a bit heavier than she should be and was definately a bit wild at times but it wasnt her fault if i hadnt worked her lately she is just a pup and allowed to be mental if she had been out at least once a week she would have been more settled. anyway an enjoyable hour and a rabbit for the ferrets.
