.20 Flatheads.....

Recommended Posts

If he puts the .177 barrel on a .22 action he'll find he's well down on power!

Mate, I shoot everything from .22 air rifle right up to .243 and beyond, plus 12, 20 and 28 bore shotguns. Shot a load of clays today with the 12, and the instructor keeps bollocking me for trying to "aim" at the clays, there's the rifle shooter in me!

I know as well as anyone that it's all a matter of personal preference. I stumbled into .22 more by accident than anything, as I bought a .22 because it looked pretty, before I knew much about air guns, and just kind of stuck with it. The .20 is a good middle round, but any of the 4 main airgun calibres will do the job, just need to practice and get to know them.

Anyway, that's enough massive thread drift. Have you had a look on eBay for the .20 pellets? It's amazing what turns up on there sometimes! Edited to add, there are a fair few .20 pellets on there.

I like the domed pellets, they seem to offer the best trade off between penetration, consistency at longer ranges and downrange impact. The wound track from a round nose is pretty impressive, as good as a wad cutter. The flatheads tend to be a little inconsistent, as any damage causes a fairly major imbalance in the spin, whereas the domes don't seem to suffer from this as much.

In .22 I like RWS super hollow points or superdomes. Both rarely go straight through, and even if they do they impart enough energy to ensure a clean kill!

Yup, you're dead right, Matt. We chronoed the gun after the swap and it lost the expected 10% in power. It's been pumped up to compensate and now shoots fine.

I know exactly what you mean, I grew up with airguns and got my first shotgun when I was 14. Couldn't hit sh*t with it at first for exactly the reasons you've said... DON'T TRY TO AIM A SHOTTY!!!

It wasn't until I'd left school and got my first job in a gun shop that things clicked with a shotgun. Too much time on my own, I guess.... I've not had a shotty for a good few years now, not really had a use for one but I do miss rough shooting. I'm happy enough beating these days and popping off the odd bunny on the estate.

Maybe next year...

Hi Andy mate.

Have you ever tried H&N Field and Target Trophy in .20? I shoot them in .22 for the FAC HW80s. They are a domed pellet but deform on impact and retain a massive amount of shock without over-penetration. Could be just what you are looking for (?) :hmm: .

I was over at Guns International today getting Karl to fit a new cocking link shoe and pivot to one of my 80s, and the place is beginning to look really bare with Karl's retirement and finish at the end of the month. Offer him a deal on a bulk ammo buy and you could get a bargain.

Best regards mate

Well, I hope I haven't given you duff gen Andy, but, I'm sure I've seen .20cal. H&N FTT listed along with their other pellet types.

A Google search or a look over a large dealers lists like Uttings will confirm that one way or another mate?

Now not sure.. :hmm:

Problem solved!!

I've got hold of a tin of Bisley Super Fields and they group well enough in my 90 to be of good use at the short to medium ranges that I need. They fly well and don't pass through the ferals and the asbestos roof... :whistling:

Thanks for all your reply's, fellas.
