.20 Flatheads.....

Recommended Posts

I took my .22 King Ratty out for a couple of hours today in the hope of shooting some ferals in a mate's barn that have been crapping all over the place.. It got a lot colder than I'd expected and the good old Co2 lost power. :wallbash:

I don't blame the gun, it's a really useful little tool for such things, my fault, should've checked the forecast. :icon_redface:

Anyway as the weather's getting colder. I'll not be useing the Ratty for a while, so that means I'll be useing my .20 HW90. I normally use Baracuds or Dynamic's but they go through ferals like they're not there so I need something with a lot less penetration. I've tried Bisley Pest Control but they're utter sh*te past 15 or so yards, flying all over the place.

I'd really like to use a wadcutter but I can't seem to find any in .20...

Anyone any ideas??

Cheers.

Had a look for you but nothing, thought maybe bisely practice might come in .20 but no. Maybe a heavier, slower pellet might help, bisely mags perhaps?

Thanks, Edgar but Bisley Mags and Baracuds are the same pellet both made by H and N but in different tins and Bisley don't bother with the .20's... :hmm: they only do those stupid pest controls that are really just a hollow Baracuda.

Cheers for looking though.

Just found H and N do a .20 hollow point, maybe try them?

They do, same as the Beaman Silver Bear but I can't find anywhere that stocks them. I've used them many years back in .177 and they were fine, really just a flathead with a daft little bit in the middle but they did fly OK.

Hi

Not much about for .20 calibre

Thanks, Matt but to be honest I'm not a fan of .22 other than for close range work. The 90's my main gun and has been for the past 12 years, it was .177 when I first bought it and I fitted the .20 barrel a couple of years ago and for me it works very well indeed.

I do most of my shooting out in the open and use the Ratty for shooting in or around buildings, I don't do much of this type of shooting and as it's getting rather cold, Co2's no use.

I'll try and track down some H and H Hollow points from the links that have been posted, I've used them before and TBH I'd forgotten they're available in .20. If my 90 shoots well with them, they'll be perfect for what I need.

Cheers.

Hi Andy

Si gave me a good tip clean your barrel before changing pellet brand.

Thanks, Alan but the Pest Controls I've had no luck with really are just a Baracuda with a hollow head, both made by H and N from the same lead in the same factory....

You're dead right though, it can take a little while for a new brand to settle in a gun. I use the Baracudas (lead) and the Dynamics (tin) and when I change from one to the other, the first dozen or so shots are all over the place 'til it settles down.

I know that's maybe an extreme example but years back I had an HW80 in .22 that loved RWS Hobbys and Eley Wasps (before they turned to sh*t  ) and that was the same, first few shots were crap 'til it settled...

Andy, I was joking about the barrel change, though I have to take exception to your casting aspersions on the .22 for long range shooting. If the useless organic bit on the end of the rifle does it's part (that's me) then it's a devastating round out to any sensible air rifle hunting range. The .177 might make things a little easier, but I think it packs less of a downrange punch.

 Fair comment, Matt.

I'm no long range shooter but I just get on better with the smaller calibers. I seldom shoot past 40 ish yards and just find .20 for me anyway, kills what I'm shooting at the best. I know it's probably just a head thing but it works for me.

Oddly enough, my mate Paul's just got a 90 in .22 and I gave him my old .177 barrel as he prefers the small calibers too, so that means I do have access to a .22 barrel..!!

I'm still not going to fit it though....:laugh::tongue2::thumbs:
