pest hunter 151 15
I had decided to take the scope off one of my guns to shoot open site. After lots of thought i decided to take the 3-9x40 off my hw99s. I zeroed the open sites at 18 yard and was suprised at the amount of accuracy i could achieve with open sites At 18 yards i can fit 5 shots under a 5p and at 25 yard i can fit 5 shots under a penny. Unfortunetly after 25 yard the groups seem to open up so 25 yard is my max hunting range. So i took the hw99s for a mooch arround the small farm were i proceeded to shoot 2 squirrels and a pigeon. (sorry no pics forgot my phone). I enjoy my hunting more now with the simpeler set up, Less math more stalking 4 Quote Link to post

zini 1,939
Hi Pest buddy, I agree with you pal, open sights are very useful for close to medium range shooting and vermin work. I didnt have a scope on my rifles till i was about 16, so spent 3 years shooting open sights. Them open sights accounted for many a bird, rat or the occassional bunny as a kid. Even when i got a scope it was only a old 4x20 which for me was awesome and made me feel like a sniper I didnt get a bigger one really for years where i had a SMK Custom Lion with a 3-9x32 scope for vermin shooting, did its job though and hammered lots of vermin. Cant fault you buddy SPA and 5***** for trying something new. At least your not coming on here like someone once did claiming to hit a 2p coin at 70 yards with open sights every shot and knock over bunnies at 100 yards regulary with open sights and a sub 12 ft/Lb air rifle. Your keeping real which is great to see. Si Edited November 14, 2010 by zini Quote Link to post
pianoman 3,587
Well done for taking the decision to shoot this way pest hunter151. I returned a few years ago to shoot open sights on one of my .22 HW80s' as well as with it mounted with a scope. 25 yards is a decent enough open-sight zero range and, with practice, you'll soon shrink your groups very tightly to confidently shoot another 10 or 15, though that's really pushing it and for target only, I don't risk it on live quarry and keep to around 15-20 yards for rabbits, God knows they look small enough at that range! It's a shooting skill many of us learned in our boyhoods when usable scopes for airguns just didn't exist and I've thought it a bit of a shame to have let it go. All the best with your continuance, hunting and practice Simon Edited November 14, 2010 by pianoman Quote Link to post
