Progress with the pup

Recommended Posts

Thought I would do a wee write up on how the pups coming on.I have had the pup oot ferreting about half a dozen times now in the last month or so and think she,s doing very well.Sometimes I take nets and other times I don,t just to give the pup a couple of runs.I decided to take her oot the other day without the nets for a wee bit sport. The first warren I tried was a three or four holer, popped the one ferret in and after a minute or so a rabbit bolted, she gave chase but the rabbit hit cover which was nearby very quickly, she lost it and returned to the warren straight away to wait for the next one to bolt, none did and as I lifted the ferret she ran back into the cover for anther look, she never lifted anything but as you can see she,s beginning to get the hang of things.

On to the next warren, another three or four holer in tussocky grass, again popped the single ferret in and waited, ten minutes later still nothing happening and as I don,t use a locator this is when a dog can come in very handy, the pup made her way across the field, not running but making her way across as if she had spotted something,I just left her to it as I try not to overly control the pup and let her find her own way,(unless she wanders off through boredom or is sitting directly in front of a hole I pretty much just leave her to it now),anyway she was now about fifty feet away and she put her nose down,I could tell by her manner something was there or had just been there ,then she stood at one spot as if she was marking,I had a walk over and when I got there the ferret appeared from a bolt hole, this bolt hole was roughly fifty feet away from the main warren,a fair distance but the ground is very soft here so not impossible to have a bolt hole at this distance, the ferret could have easily slipped out without me noticing so the pup came in very handy and is reminding me why I enjoy ferreting so much with a dog as part of the team.

Too see her like this now compared to her first time when she didn,t have a clue what was happening is very encouraging,I think she is going to be a great allie, :D

Cheers and happy hunting,
