romany52 313
The pup has to be capable of catching, I always look at it this way, when you first go out with a pup it will chase crows and gulls,it soon learns that it's never going to catch one, so stops chasing them. The same thing happens with rabbits, although it can be turned round with some easy ones, it's still a big knock to their confidence at a critical time in their development. Quote Link to post

bradaz2009 9
your skill as a dogman is to not start them 2early just take them out and let them learn(school) then when they mature let them have a go (giving them a job) what is the point in going that bit to early spoilin a dog then getting another say then you gotta wait till that one is mature so wait 3-4 moths or go through it all again and wait 18 months till the next pup to run ruin whatever you choose with the next one but each to thier own eh jmo and that is very true romany bout the gulls Quote Link to post
shushycatcher 219
my dog pup caught his first rabbit today at 7 months, thetwo older dogs flushed it and he coursed it and caught it sweet as a nut,i never start a pup before twelve months but seen as he has done that today i might take him for a walk with the lamp when the moon goes back. toddsmaggie 3
take it out mate, but only for a couple of runs. select the runs so it has a chance of putting a bend in. you wont do it no harm. atb i agree if there kick ups its fine Quote Link to post
robo-christ 40
what good can come of starting it this early? nothing. what bad can come of it?you could wreck your pup. just be patient. Quote Link to post
deer stalker 2008 3
i have a 8 momth old pup doing bunnys for fun on the lamp & daylight, i will introduce her to bigger quarry when i think shes ready, i started her on bunnys with the older bitch at 6 half month old, few nights a week on the lamp, if the pups been watching an older dog run rabbits & its wanting to be off the slip when watching a course then let it have a few runs (squaters) if you then think she not ready wait i bit longer just my opinion but thats the way i do it, just take it easy atb what ever you decide. 3 Turns 326
don't think there is any harm in starting a dog early, just as long as it is done slowly and the handler has to be patient, I started my dog at 5 mths out ferreting once a week for 2 hrs, just letting her have a look at whats going on, introduced her to the lamp at 7mths old 2 weeks ago, only 2-3 hrs once a week out with a mate and his dog letting her see how it's done, at the end of the night giving her an easy slip, she has caught and retreived a rabbit both nights and caught her first daytime rabbit yesterday while out for a walk, iam no expert but this way has worked for me and my dog, she is 3/4 whippet 1/4 beddy, cheers......john GOOD ON U MATE AND YOUR PUP.
