How many dogs

Recommended Posts

Just a quick question...how many dogs (lurchers) do you own and do they all get the work that they should. I myself have 3 (all bull blooded) but at the minute seem to only have the work for 2..although the 3rd comes into play when 1 of the others is in sick bay or just resting up...look forward to all the replies on the subject..atb stabba

Very interesting topic.

I have three whippets. They work during the winter and race in the summer.

My problem is they are 2,3 and 4 so in a few years they will be 8,9 and 10.

I work for myself and sometimes don't get the chance to work them as much as I would like. They always get plenty walks and the racing is good on a Sunday but I am hoping to work them a lot more this year.

It is very easy to get carried away and end up with far too many dogs.

Most people need to work and if you have a family you ned to spend time with them. Doesn't leave a lot of time to work loads of dogs.

Most of my time is spent lamping these days as I can do it when the kids are in bed.

Just the pup, and ive got enough work for her. Ill get another pup when shes well entered and I know exactly what shes capable of, whens shes around 2 and a half to 3. I think 2 working lurchers is plenty for most, but of course some people might have a brace of lamping dogs but also need a dog for more specialist jobs.

Two lurchers and a pup, the pup is a bit early really as the other two are only about 3 and 4 but the older bitch has had such trouble with injuries i wanted something ready for next season. Plus a terrier to flush to them. I am bushing every weekend and in the week when theres enough light after work plus ferreting and lamping a few times a week in the season. It seems like alot of dogs but still find theres times when i havent got a dog fit for what i want to do, hence the new pup. They can be a headache though and they're not cheap to run!
