beddyman 6
been offered a pure bred deerhound bitch just over a year old .. they are my fav breed of dog and i am tempted . however i have not seen them work and work is what i require my pack to do . i work whippets and they are great but my main quary is rabbits which i have lots of doing vermin control in my spare time .. but is a deerhound capable of doing rabbits on a regular basis on the lamp and ferreting etc .. is the breed not too tall for a rabbiting dog ? .. if anyone has any experience in the breed please share your oppinion as i am tempted but not sure regards thier capabilities Quote Link to post
Water Badger 26
Read the book WORKING DEERHOUNDS, LURCHERS AND LONGDOGS.by Bill Doherty you will want one after that I do top book yes they can do rabbits and if you love them and have the space why not give the bitch a home I hear they hate reduns with a passion Quote Link to post
southcott 9
I have 2 deerhounds, but from show lines, i find them to big and to slow on the turns for rabbits, they loose interest and give up, But they do enjoy other game Quote Link to post
stoaty 171
If you want a good book on deerhounds and their hybrids try the working longdog by Frank Sheardown its a great read Stoaty Quote Link to post
Guest chook
I think it all depends on the dog in question, no two are a like, my bitch can turn on a tanner and can pick up a ball on the run, just a shame she has verry little pray drive. Theres a thread somewere on hear - of a young deerhound who is going to be worked, came from someones lines in ireland, i know the parents are worked aswell, if you do a search for deerhounds lots of threads come up on them. Only thing will be is there verry slow to mature, and do take a hell of a long time so it may be a while till you could work the dog properly. Quote Link to post
Tiny 7 1,694
I love the breed myself and there crosses and what they can offer in to a lurcher, But if you want strictly rabbiting and ferreting then id stick with your whippets IMHO, Quote Link to post

I think they will be lacking intensity second of all. I also think that over time they will break down and be crippled at an early age. I really dont think they will suit you but I dont know you. stevemac 433
Beautiful breed for large game in wide open spaces the working deerhounds that are owned by my friend take a while to wind up but will run on until they have their game not my choce for rabbit. recon they would handle those deer you have over there Dan, not that anyone would do that.
