Experience wanted working with a lamp

Recommended Posts

My whippet is 1 year old. i havent done much with him, apart from taking him out with the ferret and some lamping. Hes only caught when the ferret has bolted the rabbits for him. But i cant get the hang of the lamping, i understand about the weather, windy, slightly rainy?? I have got myself a lamp with red and white capability.

I am sure the technique is passed on in the majority of cases, but as my hunting friend has birds of pray, hes never had a dog and doesnt know much on lamping.

If theres anyone in the St Helens area who would be kind enough to let me come out with them, to show me the way with my dog id be very grateful, i understand people might be funny contacting a stranger online. PM me please....if not any tips in general on lamping. thanks

Don't keep the light on all the time just have a quick scan round till you spot something, when you do get yourself between it and where it wants to run to then stick the lamp back on and either slip the dog or walk it up if its a squatter and the dog doesn't know to run the beam yet. As for technique you'll work out your own, everyone lamps differently but try and get yourself between the quarry and its escape route.

Edited to add, keep the lamp on the rabbit not the dog or infront or behind the rabbit. Sounds daft but some people do it.

Good luck.

Alright mate.

when schooling your pup go yourself take your pup over ground hes familiar with during the day.

keep him collerd and show him a few bunnies.let him see them running but dont let him go.

When lamping practice quick scans of the field looking for the eyes then switch off a go quietly and quickly to the target whispering to you dog there its there repeating the same command.

The closer you get the quieter youget flick the light on .

if your target is still stationary keep it in the middle of your beam while still talking to your pup.

hopefully the pup will have seen its quary and will be straining your slip.if the bunnie clamps give it a wee kick and slip your pup.If the bunnie is starting to get to cover flash your lampon the bunnie up and down just in front of its escape route so your casting a shadow vigoursly 9 times out of10 the bunnie will turn or run into something that gives your pup another chance.Once your pup has caught or not turn the light off and recall with a couple of short sqweeks. You dont want your pup charging round the field in the dark scareing everything away.repeat the proceedure every other night till the penny starts to drop.then dont take him hunting for a week.

next time out you will see a HUNTER NOT YOUR PUP.GOOD LUCK SON 3TURNS.
