chartpolski 24,425
Sounds like kennel cough ! A genuine vet will tell you they can't do anything about it, and will advise rest and isolation; a rip-off vet will charge you for all sorts of stuff that won't make any difference to the dogs condition ! If you have a decent vet, let them see the dog, it might be something else. Good luck ! Cheers. Quote Link to post
ianh 83
cheers thats what i thought it might be, is it bad? so no exercise just rest and benylin. Quote Link to post
chartpolski 24,425
cheers thats what i thought it might be, is it bad? so no exercise just rest and benylin. Change all the dogs bedding and clean the kennel thoroughly with something like Jayes Fluid. Give the dog a rest and, if it IS KC, it should be right in a week or so. BUT, I must stress, if it gets worse, or you are worried about it; see a vet !! Cheers. Quote Link to post

When you take him to the vets keep him in the car, its highly contagious and speads to other dogs like wild fire. Benyln is the only cure mate. Quote Link to post

KC is rapidly transferred from dog to dog, and your dog most likely got it from your mates dog; so I'm not saying your house needs cleaning ! LOL ! I've had two dogs get it, and a third dog in the same kennels not get it ! But it pays to clean everything out anyway. Hope it's nowt serious and the dogs O.K. ! Cheers. Quote Link to post
sambo123 629
Run a boiling hot bath close the windows in the bathroom and wait until the bathroom gets steamy. Stick the dogs in the bathroom for half hour. The steams good for their throat. When my dogs get it I do that and it sorts it out. Quote Link to post
skycat 6,173
Did the dog get a lot of hard runs, or even not so hard runs if he wasn't used to that amount of work? Dogs that aren't quite fit enough, or are unused to galloping hard, can get a sore throat when run hard....partly due to the unnacustomed hard panting, sometimes because they have breathed in dust, mud particles kicked up by the feet of the prey they are chasing: this can irritate the throat and make them retch, cough: almost as if they have something stuck in their throats, which is very similar to the symptoms of kennel cough. Just to add: if muck/fur etc gets down into the dog's lungs that will make it cough as well until it has got rid it. And of course, the more the dog coughs, the sorer it will make its airways. Warmth and rest: not having to breathe in cold air: that helps. And a soothing something such as a spoonful of honey every few hours can help too. Quote Link to post
chartpolski 24,425
Benylin, steam and whatever the vet sells you will only aleviate the symptoms, not cure the problem. Rest and time is the only cure for KC, it's just like us having a cold or 'flu; lots of things help, but nothing cures it ! Cheers. Quote Link to post

chartpolski 24,425
At the end of the day, NONE of us are vets, and can only give you advice based on our own experiences ! If you are worried, see a reputable vet, and explain about the other dog coughing before yours did. Hope it OK. Cheers. Quote Link to post

If he goes off his food, I'd take him to the vets. If you never said your pals dog was coughing then I would be in doubt but it really sounds like KC, every one who runs dogs with other guys has came across it at some time. Its a right sore sounding bark of a cough and is really uncomfortable but as I said, if a dogs eating then its a general rule of thumb. Quote Link to post
