dog coughing

Recommended Posts

hello all, was just wondering if anyone can spread any light on this, think im off to vets in morning anyway but any ideas appreciated.

went out with my mate an our 2 dogs tuesday night, his dog had a cough, he thought he had scratched it chewing a stick, his vet said the same, gave him some antibiotics and said keep an eye on it thought nothing more of it but good to get it checked, well after spending the night and day together yeasterday i have come home from work tonight to find mine now coughing in much the same way, like he's got something stuck in his throat.

he sounds like he's trying to be sick also.

im going to get him to vets asap so ill see what they say, but anyone had this before or any idea what it might be? :hmm:

Sounds like kennel cough ! A genuine vet will tell you they can't do anything about it, and will advise rest and isolation; a rip-off vet will charge you for all sorts of stuff that won't make any difference to the dogs condition ! If you have a decent vet, let them see the dog, it might be something else. Good luck !

Cheers.

cheers thats what i thought it might be, is it bad? so no exercise just rest and benylin.

Change all the dogs bedding and clean the kennel thoroughly with something like Jayes Fluid. Give the dog a rest and, if it IS KC, it should be right in a week or so. BUT, I must stress, if it gets worse, or you are worried about it; see a vet !!

Cheers.

yeah he lives in the house mate, probably could do with a clean tho :icon_redface: . im going to get him to vets anyway and see what they say. cheers for the help.

When you take him to the vets keep him in the car, its highly contagious and speads to other dogs like wild fire. Benyln is the only cure mate.

KC is rapidly transferred from dog to dog, and your dog most likely got it from your mates dog; so I'm not saying your house needs cleaning ! LOL ! :icon_redface: I've had two dogs get it, and a third dog in the same kennels not get it ! But it pays to clean everything out anyway. Hope it's nowt serious and the dogs O.K. !

Cheers.

Did the dog get a lot of hard runs, or even not so hard runs if he wasn't used to that amount of work? Dogs that aren't quite fit enough, or are unused to galloping hard, can get a sore throat when run hard....partly due to the unnacustomed hard panting, sometimes because they have breathed in dust, mud particles kicked up by the feet of the prey they are chasing: this can irritate the throat and make them retch, cough: almost as if they have something stuck in their throats, which is very similar to the symptoms of kennel cough.

Just to add: if muck/fur etc gets down into the dog's lungs that will make it cough as well until it has got rid it. And of course, the more the dog coughs, the sorer it will make its airways. Warmth and rest: not having to breathe in cold air: that helps. And a soothing something such as a spoonful of honey every few hours can help too.

not really mate, i do think his fitness dropped a little, i had a hernia op and the girlfriend didnt exercise him nearly enough for a week or two, but thats a month since and i think he's up getting there again, he didnt even get that many runs though and nothing too far or long, im only just starting him still really.

i really cant afford a vet bill but i still dunno, i dont want to risk his health if it could be something bad

If the dog isn't off his food and is drinking as usual, leave him for a couple of days giving him benyln. If he goes off his food, I'd take him to the vets. If you never said your pals dog was coughing then I would be in doubt but it really sounds like KC, every one who runs dogs with other guys has came across it at some time. Its a right sore sounding bark of a cough and is really uncomfortable but as I said, if a dogs eating then its a general rule of thumb.
