prey drive

Recommended Posts

The greyhound is the only sighthound that will run something they know they will never catch over and over again with insane desire. Their "drive" to chase has been bred in a way that makes them almost stupid. They know its a game and they know its fake but they cannot resist the temptation to run it like they mean it. No other breed will do this cuz if they would, we'd be bettin on them and not the greyhounds. Money talks and bullshit walks. Only when there is a defined finish line of some sort will you ever see the elite canine athletes with the most drive and desire. I aint just talkin racing here either. Just like race horses though, greyhounds have been bred pretty much only for speed and this comes at a cost.

ive worked lurchers all my life and i race greyhounds and the prey drive in greyhounds is over the top they only see what their chasing and are blind to anything in their way.i did own a threequarter greyhound quarter pitbull bitch who had the same sort of prey drive unbelievable one gear only i did own a deerhound x greyhound who although good on rabbits and hares would not go near the big stuff and she was bred out of real killing machines on larger quarry . but the prey drive on the greyhound is second to none

I would say and it's just my opinion, that the pure sight hound most commonly seen in the U.K to have the highest prey drive would be the whippet. Don't laugh! :whistling: Although i agree a pure grey takes some beating if you find a cracker, and i'm sure on dans side of the pond this isn't so hard, but a true working grey is a hard thing to find these days in the U.K. There are however some fantastic lines of working whippet in this country and some of them really do have balls the size of melons. The ones i've seen have very high prey drive and little concept of their own size (although many are 22"), whether they pull it off or not they will pile into pretty much anything you try them on.

Doesn't need to be a working greyhound , it's prey drive that makes them race.

Good point! I just guess for me its easier to see it when they are smashing through a hedge to get at something rather than chasing a dummy.
