danebrewer10 6
I don't think you're going to get that much improvement, not in any kind of value for money silencer, I have a SAK, which I think is for a .22 anyways, and that's plenty quiet, I think you've got to accept that the HMR is fairly noisy- super sonic bullets, but you could pay a lot more for a few extra dB of sound reduction, but you've got to ask yourself, is it reallly nessecary, and am I willing to pay the price? Colster 1
Shoot the rifle at a good backstop at no more than about 10-15yards. This way the bullet doesn't have time to go supersonic and you'll hear the noise that just the gun makes. I have a SAK on mine and it's pretty quiet on short range stuff, hitting stuff out at over 60yards and you'll be hearing the bullet crack as it's going faster than the speed of sound - no moderator in the world can do anything about that. redtailhawk1 84
I have a DM80 on mine and does a great job. I have used it with both the SAK and DM80 and the SAK does not come close. I would not use it lamping on my permission with a SAK mod but the DM80 does the job just fine. I have shot two rabbits next to each other at about 1m apart and they did not complain lol Quote Link to post

Sounds like a sirocco. I still maintain with a bullet making as much noise as it does and a reasonably quiet muzzle report a SAK is all you need. I've shot three rabbits all close together on a number of occasions with the HMR/SAK combo. Spend what you want on a mod but my advice is don't bother, the SAK will do as much as is necessary. I've got to agree with the above. I bought my 17hmr complete with a ASE Utra mod, was impressed with it but swapped the mod onto my .22lr and put the sak on the 17hmr. Its a little bit louder than the ASE, but the supersonic crack is still 10 times louder! The ASE however has made a massive difference to the .22lr, its now whisper quiet! Save your money and stick with what you've got! Thats my opinion, hope it helps! ATB Phil Quote Link to post

I don't see how the bullet gets faster one it's out of the barrel? (hmmm invention time- bullets with a booster rocket...) surely the crack comes only after the bullet has built up enough air pressure in front of it to create the crack, but I'd have thought that would be more or less right in front of the muzzle, thinking about how fast the bullet is travelling. the bullet is travelling at supersonic speeds right after it leaves the muzzle, once it out, it's already slowing down actually having thought about this you only hear the crack when the object passes you, so the shock wave has to reflect off of something and travel back to you, when you shoot at a backstop that is very close, the time between the muzzle blast and the shock wave reaching your ears in undestinguishable from eachother.... at least that's what I understand, I may be wrong. Apparently there's a newer version about to be released. HMR's without a silencer are quire loud & a good / bad silencer does make some difference. Quote Link to post
danebrewer10 6
I'd have to get them side by side and compare them for myself, it seems the DM80 is a tad quieter, but the ASE is just a slightly different noise to the SAK. Quote Link to post
Tobias 0
Dont try the wildcat cub its a load of sh-t nearly made my ears bleed was a waste of money took it back and got the whisper in 17hmr cal . Its loads better no more ringing ears and shot loads of groups of bunnies from 50yards out to 120 yards might not be the best but its easy to clean and take apart. Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
There isn't a great mod for a HMR, or WMR come to that. I have tried loads of mods on them, including centrefire mods. I found the DM80 (older model) to be the quietest...JUST, the trade off was it was the biggest and heaviest! If anyone tells you I have an X, Y or Z mod and it is miles better than a SAK they have a problem with their ears! .....and you are right about the Whisper, complete waste of £125! Quote Link to post
redtailhawk1 84
Nothing wrong with my hearing. I would not put a SAK on my HMR again! The DM80 is alot better and not just an opinion people have do sound tests using different mods on HMR and the DM80 came out on top. Sure you will find them if you do a search on here or pigeon watch forum. Anyway personal choice and I would not use the SAk although I would use it on a .22 There isn't a great mod for a HMR, or WMR come to that.
