Neatly back on thread..

I use British Military DPM (I don't personally give a shit what the M stands for) and a German service cap or a headnet. As Rabbits see only in Black and White and rely on seeing movement or stark contrasts such as your shape appearing over the horizon or brightly standing out against the greens and browns of foliage, for visual acuity, their cheif weapons of sensory defense are their ability to smell, and hear the enemy approaching.

Thus very expensive items of cammo clothing are somewhat more of a choice for comfort and weatherproofing than actually being the only option to render you invisible amid your surroundings. Anything which reasonably matches you to the terrain your shooting in, will work well at blending you in. Good fieldcraft skills are needed to take care of the rest.

A very good question that deserves a good answer.   Apart from special services worldwide, the army wouldnt/couldnt waste money on giving all soldiers hitech camo patterns, because they know that ca

fieldcraft, slow movement, staying against the wind and a manky green jumper works for me! although i'm prone to using a green snooze over my lily white mush cos i practically glow in the dark...

i find scent to be more of an issue than cammo(cos the wind whistles around all ways in the valley), so just to be sure i keep my shooting kit in a bin bag so it wont pick up house smells, and give it a dose of 'eu de woodsmoke' every now and again...

I must say, I never thought of getting a scent of woodsmoke on my shooting togs Wurz, does that work? Scent is one of biggest giveaways there is against us.

Apparently a rabbit's nose can pick-up a human scent at over 100 metres away. There is an approach to one of my permissions where you have only one point of entry and if the winds and breezes are at your back there, you'll see late-afternoon rabbits scurry off in alarm in the far distance. no matter how quietly and stealthily you approach and you're in for a long wait before they re-emerge.

I remember my father used to use a specific jacket and trousers for his rabbit shooting sorties with his .22 rimfire. He would hang them outdoors to get soaked in the rain and air dry them in a part of the garden to get a natural earthy aroma, which, he claimed was very good at masking his scent. I remember my mother gave them a wash and he went off muttering about "have to boody well start all over again now!"

Here you go, Tony, have a hug and a cuddle from me... :air_kiss:

Tommorow's another day, mate. ;)

Thank you Andy, you know your absolutely right  Today is another day (sort of anyway)

I awoke up to the sound of my mobile. It was Gem, my solicitor, she had some good news for me (FINALLY :boogie: after 11 months of nothing but fecking stress) The Council have backed down and I no longer need to take a full case to the Courts costing the tax payers thousands! The Council are happy for Gem to write an order telling the council to do what I require. Gem then takes the order to the Court, has it stamped by a judge and the council will no longer contest the order :victory::toast:

Gem then told me the bad news  of which I won't go into details.

I told the soon to be ex-wife the good news thinking it will make her happier and put at least a smile on her face.

Then Dillan text to say he had a ratting trip planned for this evening and he is picking me up at 18:00 :boogie:

Then the really bad news came in :icon_eek:

Thanks to dillan though, I'll be able to let off some steam this evening :notworthy: So hopefully I'll be a little better mood when I've been on the murderous spree tonight

Socks Sorry buddy for sounding off :sorry:

it was advice i got from a deerstalker years back, it seems to work tho mate. mind you, its easy for me to stink of fires cos of doing the survival courses every other weekend...

your dad was right tho, my uncle always did the same with his hunting gear, but the woodsmoke really helps disguise the human scent on top of an earthy smell, or if you've permission then a little fire for a cup of tea before you start your session'll work wonders on hiding that 'manstink'.if you keep your gear bagged up at home the smell'll stay for a couple of sessions at least

it makes no odds to me what i wear if i was honest when i go out its normally pitch dark having said that sometimes when im at work and shooting in not in any type of camo and i still get a few kills ...like pianoman and wurz have also said it more about stealth than what you wear ....

Hi guys,

I have only just seen and read this thread.

It’s very interesting to hear other peoples views on camouflage brands and field craft etc.

My personal views that are based around my own experiences as an air rifle hunter are that:

1. Keeping down wind when rabbit shooting is vital.

2. Slow movements from the stalk of the vermin to letting off the second stage on the trigger need to be slow and deliberate or you will spook the rabbits.

3. Any clothing that are earth colours (brown, black, green or dark) will due if the above are adhered to.

4. I’ve shot many times in jeans and a t-shirt and gone home with a feed.

5. When static hunting over a rabbit warren or squizzer drey, earth colours will work just fine as long as the movement is dropped to a minimum.

6. I have real tree, DMP and German pattern and all do in some way help break up your bodies outline if you use it correctly by putting yourself against a similar back ground.

7. When wearing these brands of clothing to stalk with think about where you are and where you want to take your shot from first.

8. Make your plan in your mind and then think to yourself how will I get there?

9. Use the surrounding land features to assist you in getting to your shot area, if you can move to the area below the line of sight of your quarry, it’s far better than trying to use your clothing.

10. Make all movements slow and take breaks between movements to re assess the current situation and whats happening, this is as most good plans don’t survive contact.

In summary for me scent, sight and personal cunning and stealth are more important.

Just my own personal views that I hunt by, some may say im talking shite and that’s ok but its what I do and use and it seems to work for me.

Cheers

i use and have for many years the british army dpm nbc suits cheep as chips and tough as hell, not very water proof but the charcoal lining stops the wind and rain getting through to your clothes underneath, and also stops your heat exscaping out, very often find my self to hot.

just got a new one or never issiued from yomans £6 95, my last one is a good 8 years old and is only being replaced because i burnt it on the camp fire sticking the boot in.

just to have my say i think camo is not as important as good fieldcraft. rabbits have pretty poor vision. they see in black and white and as long as you move at snails pace (literaly), stay down wind, keep sound levels to a minimum you can wear pretty much anything which breaks up your shape by the slightest. this is what fieldcraft is all about. squirrels are fairly stupid IMO and most of the time they spot you first, go up a tree and stop at the first branch. they believe that you being a ground predator that they are perfectly safe up a tree, obviously not knowing that pellets are'nt ground predators. in areas that they have been shot before wearing something drab and sitting at the base of a tree usually works as the only movement you'l make is slowly lifting up the muzzle of a gun. NOW i hunt pigeons more than any other quarry and this is wear i think camo really mtters. pigeons have THE BEST vision of any airgun quarry and can easily spot the unnatural shade of a pink face in the undergrowth. they can also see you if your outline isnt broken up. this is wear i think you need to go full monty camo wise. face veil, gloves, gun cover and good break-up jacket and trousers. you only want the smallest patch of skin revealed which is your eyes. most of the time pigeons are in trees and this is also where they have the advantage. without good camo or a face veil (and even with if you dont use fieldcraft) they can see you easily within 100yrds of them. i have a theory that once they've spotted any preadator they will keep and eye on it until it comes too close to there comfort zone and they'll fly. this is why you have to make sure they dont spot you first. i use danish m86 which is like flecktarn but more green with no browns. i have sown small ellasisized patches (cut out from socks) to thread in ferns and other foliage into it. i believe this has allowed me to get far more pigeons than i would have without. if you look on my profile, then my topics, and go to the second one down if you look through those pics you'll see a pic of me wearing this and apart from my hand you can hardly see anything.
