stormrider8 59
Alright all, me and a mate had our first trip out with the keeper this year. We did an hour or so with no result then found a place where the dogs gave a good mark. We stopped a few in as the keeper only had a gun and would have been hard to keep the lot covered. Long story short! we entered a young russel dog who bolted one then after a short while came out and we then ran a more experienced dog through just to check!! Turns out there were a brace in there and we ended up spending the rest of the day there digging it out! The reading we got on the box was 2.5 but it was on a steep bank that you could hardly stand on.. The first 600 mm was quite soft then we hit flint and all sorts of stuff.. Just wondered what you lads do in that situation as this is only my third year doing terrier work. The shortest way to the dog in reality would be to dig at 90 degrees to the bank but it didnt turn out as easy.. Got the result after 4 or so hours and the dog did us proud.. Quote Link to post
dog fox 16
straight down and keep your sides straight Quote Link to post
stormrider8 59
straight down and keep your sides straight We started off going straight down mate but when we eventually got to the pipe had to tunnel on to get to the dog, feckin nightmare! could have gone a bit cross eyed if the ground was dodgy! I new the shortest reading on the box would have ment digging on an angle but hard as feck to work out what way to go.. ha ha Quote Link to post
pikesta 54
the same thing happened to me and my mate on friday! was out bushin in afternoon when a fox broke from cover and headed to a big place on a bank, bitch followed in. after 1/2 hour found her at 2.5 right under a tree. it was dark by now so back for the lamp, after 3 1/2 hours and some hard digging round roots finaly reached her and her quarry. drenched, cold and knackered we was happy just to get the bitch out. dont think we'll be back there anytime soon. Same mate a good result after but the dog will never go in there again.. Quote Link to post
Waz 4,276
My opinion only way is to go straight down, or you could end up with a collapse. Quote Link to post

Yes mate but if you dig to the shortest reading straight down then you will never drop on the dog, and will have either have to open the hole out all the way around or trench on! Thanks for reply Quote Link to post
genuine 81
Straight down, and if you have dug it once you can do it again! 1 Quote Link to post
stormrider8 59
Yeah good one.. But the deeper you go the wider you go! and the lamp was already out.. Just wondered if there were an easier way.. we would have soon needed a swing shovel!! Quote Link to post
dog fox 16
timing is everything on a deep one ,start digging to soon and dog will dig under you and ferther up the tube and could be way off by time you get there ,and start to late and the dog may have took a lot of stick before you start digging and may be at least a couple of hours digging before you get there after that .and at 10 ft or more you can only be digging one hole and then your into darkness and things get realy hard . it also helps a lot if you know the terrier . best of all you got the dog back safe and thats what matters and good luck with your future digs because you,ll do it again Quote Link to post

dogs-n-natives 1,182
Ive tried trenching in from the side a couple of times< but its a skill in its own right and not for me unless im very confident in certain situations. best from above in my opinion, try operating the locator on one level to give the best mark, rather than following the slope of the bank. 1 Quote Link to post

Spot on. Keep the locator at a constant height and judge it from there. If you hold it on the deck your lowest reading wont be on top of the dog. Bit of common sense also doesn't go amiss... lukey 1,621
Can be tricky mate coming in side on to the dog,...Done it once by accident on a sandy banking 7ft broke in side of the dog then seconds after lifting dog out the roof came in dog wouldnt have stood a chance,...Always best to drop on the dog if you can bud but sounds like you done well getting the dog anyways 1 Quote Link to post
