Recommended Posts

Just a bit of info, SG cert' arrived today, so off to get a gun this week.

Im in North Wales and the whole process from posting forms to arrival of cert' took 12 weeks.

Happy days and have plenty of pest to clear on my permissions as its got to the point where they ring me up and ask me to clear stuff on their own farms and their sons, cousins, uncles farms etc plus lots of partridge and pheasant up for grabs as well.

Cheers

nice one!

Got mine the other week. As my cabinet isn't fitted yet it's stopped me rushing out to buy a gun before I've had a chance to try a few out. Each time I try one I think "this is the one for me" and then the next week change my mind :icon_redface:

I'm lucky to have had some coaching from a BASC instructor and he's offered to come with me to make sure I get something that fits properly. I was dead set on a 20 bore last week but yesterday put 175 cartriges through a sporting 12 bore and didn't have any shoulder ache like when I first started shooting so I'm going to stick with a 12 bore, also it's miles cheaper on cartriges.

Let us know what you go for....all I can do is drool at the gun porn on line till I've topped up my bank account again and got the cabinet fitted :)

Hi Matt, Im going for a good old 12g for starters and going for an O/U, basically Ill get whatever fits, Ill have a look at 28" barrels as Ill mainly use the gun for rough shooting and feathered pests, yea I will bash some clays as I do enjoy it.

If a 2nd hand Baikal fits well and shoulder well then Im happy to get a cheap gun, or even a couple of 3 cheap guns, I have a budget of around £750 absolute max, I know theres a few guns I could buy new , yea it would be nice to have a Beretta, just for the snobbery, but hey Id rather have 3 solid 2nd hand guns, a 12g, 410, and a 3 shot, all bases pretty much covered. It would be nice to have multi-choke gun if possible.

As for S/S v O/U Im not that well informed regarding the differences, pro's/con's guess I had better do some research just to satisfy my knowledge, thoughts appreciated.

Nik, keep saving, I know exactly how it feels balancing money, i have just paid in full for my ski trip, the accounts are with the accountants, big bill end of Jan, my GF has taken up scuba diving, something I did 20yrs ago, so I have taken it up again and keeping eyes on Ebay etc, at the end of the day though I love shooting sports more and scuba stuff can wait.

Id certainly shop around and not rush into buying anything - certainly take any gunshops advise with a pinch of salt until you have had chance to check out reviews and other owners opinions of various guns.

Id also certainly go for a cheapie gun for the first one. My first was a £100 baikal o/u. Came with 2 sets of barrels with fixed chokes - one set was for skeet, one for sporting. For both myself and my brother it was a cracking gun, and we put litterally thousands of cartridges through it before I finally part ex`d it for a new lanber o/u. The gunshop actually allowed me £150 on the baikal. Even now I wish id kept it as not only did it have sentimentla value being my first shotgun, but I find shooting more satisfying with cheapie guns!

Well I spent the morning visiting the gun shops, lots of coffee and lots of advice.

Now the owner of a Bettinsoli diamondline delux side plate 28" a fter going through a few guns for mount and pattern test and a few clays.

A very interesting morning as I tried 2 Bettinsoli's the side plate I bought and a standard diamondline, the latter of which had a completely different cast and my eye never lined up down the barrel, quiet an eye opener as they are the same gun stock!

All of the other guns I tried out would have needed a bit of expert fitting, mainly cast and comb height, but for straight out the gun rack the sideplate fitted extremely well, plus had a very good deal on it and Im chuffed with what I paid, pretty much 50% off the new price for shop soiled with a few marks on the stock.

I was going to go out this afternoon but its damn windy here and raining on and off, tomorrow looks set to be a lovely sunny but very cold day, so Il be up at sparrows fart :)
