Bosun11 537
just having a debate with my freind he saying he doesnt think a heavy bullx could catch fox pre ban of course. single handed but i think even heavy dogs find away 2 do there job evem if they aint got the speed they make up 4 it some over way. i have firstx bitch 3 genration shes not heavy but she does it on her own. so if any 1 out there has a heavy bullx that does it on there owm please put some pics up 2 prove my freind wrong cheers lads happy huntin. And some folk seem to forget where their 3/8 5/8 and 3/4 breds come from...off decent half x,s thats where....admittedley some half x,s shouldnt be bred from but good honest halfx,s are still out there..atb stabba get with the post mate ...... Ok, I'll get with the post, the post says 'heavy', well lets face it, no heavy (as in weight) can catch much at all. As for first crosses, well run at the right weight and they'll do the job, week in week out. Take the Pie dog as an example, as it's blood is so frequently mentioned in your dogs make up. The pic that has been posted on here, taken in Scotland, did that look too heavy to catch foxes, he was a genuine half cross? Well if he 'looks' capable, then i'll tell you he was capable, run at the right weight, that pic was taken when he was with one of his two owners. The other owner blew him up like a balloon, liked him all ripped an heavy, he was still capable but not in the same numbers. I've ran half crosses for enough years to know what they are capable of, I've also ran enough foxes to know what they are capable of too, i've also owned and ran 5/8ths and 3/4 breds, the 5/8ths I rated and the 3/4's were plenty fast enough, though I never felt they'd see a 'lifetime' of foxes and pretty soon they'd spew, mine never did but i've seen enough that have. What i do know is that big heads don't catch foxes, fast legs do, and on good, fit half crosses, them legs are plenty fast enough, week in week out. 3 Quote Link to post
bird 9,860
i think if you want a out out fox dog a racey 5/8 3/8 or a 3/4 quater bred thats just my choice. what ever the % dont really mater, its the weight that counts. To much weight you loose agilty, my last2 bullxs were 70- 77lb. They were fast+agile, and unless you get the fox close, you will need all that agilty catch the fecker. A fox is fast and can turn like hares at times . Spot on Ray , was once out with Andys Jenna and Tug , both good fox dogs , slipped them , the fox lay on his belly , when they got to him he jumped over both of them and ran off , we couldnt believe it , as you say they are a very tricky customer !!! BLACKWATER... 157
All the people that do abit know quite well a half x is NOT a prolific fox CATCHER.. Me personally think a half x is just the FIRST step in BREEDING all round lurchers.. All the best... Quote Link to post

cúagusgiorraí 57
if lucky you can get some racey enough 1st crosses but most are too heavy.lamping foxes is my main thing and a dog has to have speed and be well able to turn.a lot of lads dont realise how fast a fox can run and turn Derek you are absolutely correct, and in our small rough fields, a fox can be gone in a second, leaving a slow dog bewildered. I think in Ireland for sure, the fast lightly built dogs, with a quick kill, are the best. Edited November 7, 2010 by cúagusgiorraà Quote Link to post
