Berkutchi 0
I have friends (& not so friends) that do "Falconry" on landfill sites, sounds glam as its youre hobby but it can be a shitty job, sure its good flying falcons at gulls all day and depending if youre contracted or sub contracted i know of earnings in the region of £12k - £20k,but it is hard and mucky as one day i went with a friend to see his saker falcon fly at gulls and i stepped on a bag and it exploded showering me in nappys and shite, nice! Plus you have to contend with needles etc, plus the mortality rate of falcons in this enviromeant is very high due to accidents on the landfill.Flying hawks day in day out every day as a job in all weather to honour the contract is dull and tends to take the enjoymeant out of youre "hobby".Plus these avian control companys have a big turn over of staff, need i say more? I have friends (& not so friends) that do "Falconry" on landfill sites, sounds glam as its youre hobby but it can be a shitty job, sure its good flying falcons at gulls all day and depending if youre contracted or sub contracted i know of earnings in the region of £12k - £20k,but it is hard and mucky as one day i went with a friend to see his saker falcon fly at gulls and i stepped on a bag and it exploded showering me in nappys and shite, nice!Plus you have to contend with needles etc, plus the mortality rate of falcons in this enviromeant is very high due to accidents on the landfill.Flying hawks day in day out every day as a job in all weather to honour the contract is dull and tends to take the enjoymeant out of youre "hobby".Plus these avian control companys have a big turn over of staff, need i say more? sorry thought id just add the falconry version, but the others? To cut a long story short the smell did my head in and like you said it took the shine totally off birds for me, this breeding lark has done the same a bit to be Honest. I spoke to another guy who was working on a site near Peterborough tipping Hazzardouse waste which made him quite ill, all this to make a few quid hey! not my seen anymore I must admit. tCheers Tony
Guest Ditch_Shitter
Most guys find the first year or two is slow, if they go it alone. That's when a second job might help. Myself, I'm in the truly blessed situation of not needing to do it to survive I think a lot of what Berkutchi just said applies though. I'm always at pains to point out to excitable youngsters that Professional Pest Control is Not a weekend hobby. Ye don't get to hang around some farmers barn, waiting to pick off the odd rat with ye sweet sixteen. Ye don't even get to excercise ye terriers. That's fun. This is Work. What ye Do get to do is crawl, time and again, into the same stinking holes, on ye knees in the various types of shit, and open boring, uniform, black boxes. Peer inside. Pick up the pen ye just dropped in that shit and then wish to high christ somebody would invent a pen which can write through condensation, shit and slug slime! On the credit side; If ye find 'pests' interesting? Then it stays just interesting enough to make ye want to stick at it. But it's Not romantic. Bottom line, to me, is that Anything ye Have To do will bring ye to those days when ye'd Really rather be doing something ye'd Choose to do. If only playing in here. Having a beer. Getting on with some work of ye own at home. What ever. But I guess that's why it's what we call a " Job ". My view, anyway.

mole trapper 1,693
second what ditch said, true if you can keep your head above water for the first few years you should then be alright. the funny thing is people think you just walk around shooting things all day,WRONG,your crawling around in dirty kitchens, checking rodent baits ,cleaning pigeon sh.t off ledges before you proof them, filling out reems of paperwork, cosh, selling your self to people who dont want pest prevention but have to have it.Dont let anyone tell you word of mouth is enough , you have to advertise, its becoming more cut throat every year, currently i average about three and a half thousand a year on advertising alone then theres insurance, make sure your sat down before asking about that one!!. but is it worth it HELL YEAH,sorry forgot to mention training, lunatic customers and slow payers. if your really up for it ,go for it,its worth it. all the best. ChrisJones 7,975
You can earn alot more money doing other lines of work but I wouldn't go back to doing anything else. I took a big pay cut to do pest control but I've never regretted it. I've never had a day drag on me and I've never had two days the same. Man cannot live on bread alone. stubby 175
Im in pest control within the M25, having left the construction trade and taking a huge pay cut, all because Id watched life of grime for a couple of years and it looked an interesting job, the firm I joined are good on sending there people on getting quailified and I now have permits of all sorts that allow me to work on the railway system(mostly underground) was also sent to coventry to sit my BPCA/RSPH level 2 cert(which I passed) I work nights a few hours doing pest control in area's used by rail staff, controlling mice, rats, cockroaches and wasp's in the summer, sometimes fruit flies etc, then normally midnight to 5am is bird work, feral pigeon control, either proofing or culling, it is a great job and each night is different, get to work on own or with others when I started I had a huge interest in the pest side of things, ie the bugs and stuff, but now prefer the bird work, as its more construction related good things came from doing this job, as while culling rabbits on the railways, got myself permission to shoot/ferret on an adjoining farm Id say if you havent got a mortgage/kids to support/wife etc then go for it and try it, I was a single dad of 2, so went into construction to pay the bills, once they had left home the money side of it was not so important, but more job satisfaction wherebouts are you located? our firm always looking for more night staff Edited December 31, 2006 by stubby

It was around 97 - 98 time and drivieing a banged up Burgandy Citroen BX to the site , and then jumping in a old Landy to use on the site, we used to watch for the ASDA truck and when the site forman went AWOL in his white landy and get over and get some bits and peices before it was rolled over, I tell you what king! I could have made as much money and more selling the stuff of the site I picked up on a car boot sale, the stuff some of these shops dump is unreal .
