Gaz_1989 9,539
My pup is 9 weeks old on Wednesday. He has his first course of jabs at vets 2 weeks ago. He is booked in for his second jabs when he is 10 weeks. Then I'm told he can't go outside for another 2 weeks. So 3 weeks from now. As you can imagine he is mental, impossible to tire him out in the house no matter how much play he gets. Would it be risky to take him out before 2nd jabs and the 12 week point? Obviously I don't want to risk catching anything and if the risk at this age compared to in 3 weeks is HUGE then he will have to stay inside. He gets about 3 hours a day of me playing fetch or tug of war with him aswell as having mad half hours running around the living room. But he would benefit from a walk so much. And so would I! Lol. Thanks Gaz Quote Link to post
terrierjohn 49
my vet is a real good freind and he has said to me that the 2nd jag is just to make more money and my dogs have only ever had the 1st and then boosters evey yr and ive never had a problem with them picking anything up Quote Link to post

Malt 379
Depends where you're going. Should be OK if you take it somewhere where other dogs don't go. Quote Link to post
bird 9,969
well my vet said differnt, i have used him for 25years with all my lurchers, he does greyhounds at the w-ton track. The 1st jab as to be done again at 2 weeks. because the (immune-system) is not as strong at 8 weeks, so its done again to strenght it. But you can take them out, as long as they (dont) go by (other dogs)(local+parks). Is it really worth the risk just for a nother 2 weeks.?? Just keep playing with it, and get a good bond with it. . Once the are out you will wish, there were back in the feckin garden Quote Link to post

Guest chook
The first jab is always knocked out by the antibodys the pups get through the mother, that is why you have to have a second, because 90% of the time the first jab wont have taken. http://www.vetontheweb.co.uk/pet-clinic-detail.asp?id=31 You have to weigh up the pro's and cons, the early the socalisation the better it is for the pup, you only have a small window when they are young, most things like parvo etc can be carried in on your clothing shoes and walked in by other dogs wether they have been jabbed or not - personaly ive always had mine out and socalising as young as possable, most of my dogs were born hear and were out at 6 weeks, if you have a front garden, then you can use that - sit outside with the pup and let it watch the world go by - people passing etc. Quote Link to post
The one 8,495
Aye just take it somewhere out the road Quote Link to post
collie/grey 238
I also have 9 week old pup who had his first injection last week and will get his second next week, i have had him since he was just over 6 weeks old and he has been and about since IN MY ARMS or in fields for a run about that i know not many people go, you only have until the pups 12-16 weeks old to get it socialised and comfortable with the outside world and a dog with a behaver problem is far harder to treat than a disease in my opinion. Just use common sense, only let it interact with dogs you know who are vaccinated and don't take it to regularly visited spots by alot of dogs. Quote Link to post
Guest deerhound hunter
save all the hassle and just get all in 1 ,and the dog can be out 10 weeks with no problem Quote Link to post
slips 114
all my dogs only get one jab they been thro lots parvo out brakes over the years and no probs be it a gift or ive paid good money for em one jab is all they get Quote Link to post
jf1970 328
i gave my pup an 8 in 1 jab at 8wks then a booster at 12wks, never stopped her going outside, as has been said before a little common sense and you will be ok. Quote Link to post
dodgers mum 4
folk have different views on this,i have had the same vet for 30 years. When Dodger was injected he was 15 weeks old,his breeder had the kennels and a large field,Dodger was out running about since he could walk. When he had his first injection the vet said i could take him out where possibly no other dogs go,which is handy as the moors are only 10 minutes away by car.now Gypsie was injected at 7 weeks but i got her when she was 5 weeks.I was told the same.Parvo is a horrible when a pup catches it,i think everyone goes through the thoughts will i or wont i take the pup out,but being logical lol which i am not, like said it is carried on clothes and foot wear,so if someone came to your home to visit, they could be carrying the infection with them, with out even knowing. There is a chance your pup would catch it then.Dont get me wrong i am not telling you to take your pup out but if you look at it logicaly.Parvo is also in the air.Good luck with the little fella. If in doubt do what your heart tells you,two weeks will pass quickly.
