But, the Krays were no respectors of the common man as you might think; other than to extort money out him. If you or your parents ran a shop or small business in their part of the East end, working all hours, you could expect a heavy visit to pay them protection money so you didn't get robbed, your shop wrecked or burned and you beaten to hell. Don't think for a minute they were like an unofficial police force, using violence to keep the streets safe from their own kind! If they were running things today, they would be employing the same car jackers and muggers for their own ends. If one of them so much as thought of defying them and operating alone, he'd end up dead in a skip. Violence and fear were the tools of their trade and they new how to use it. It's how they made their money. This pair absolutely loved hard, physical violence and although there are just three murders linked to them, two of which put them away, there are scores of cases where people were beaten savagely who just looked at them funny! To keep an empire like theirs running, required a lot of bent coppers in Scotland Yard taking bribes to look the other way. Corrupt police, gang violence, mayhem.
