Mastiff 7
Hi all, Sorry to drag this up again, bought my first rifle (Anschutz .22Lr) as stated elsewhere rifle was offered with a mod for which I don't have a slot on my ticket. The guy I bought the rifle from didn't have the mod on his either (think it's an air rifle mod, internal parts are a spigot, spring and six small cone shaped sections), obviously I've left the mod with him as I don't need the $hit. My "problem" is this: as my ticket is for target shooting only I've been told that I wouldn't get a variation as it will only work with sub-sonic ammo anyway (which I don't need), the rifle has a very short barrel and just looks daft without the mod. Question is if I took all the guts out of the mod and threw them away would it be safe and legal? Sorry to be a pain, Mick. Quote Link to post

Sorry to be a pain, Mick. safe and legal to use you mean ? no it wouldnt. its wouldnt do anything if it didnt have any insides. and second and the MOST IMPORTANT THING you cant use a mod on your rifle if you havent got a slot to use one on that rifle no matter what insides it has. So it would still be classed as a moderator if it had no sound reduction capabilities because it was just a hollow tube? Quote Link to post
SNAP SHOT 194
Still classed as such under law, even without baffles, Snap. Quote Link to post
Mastiff 7
Cheers for clearing that up guys. Any opinions on me being granted a variation for a mod on a target shooting ticket? thanks, Mick. Quote Link to post
RicW 67
Mick - I'm puzzled by your remark that you don't need subsonic ammo for target work. Oh yes you do! All recognised small bore target shooting specifies max MV <1000fps - subsonic. If I have misread you, apoplogies. Ric Quote Link to post
HUnter_zero 58
Mick, first off whoever told you that you can not have a moderator for range use is wrong. Health and safety! The reason you need a moderator is to reduce the risk to your hearing, should your police force deny this perfectly acceptable request, then you would see damages from the police force should you suffer hearing loss. You will get a moderator on your ticket and rightly so. Seems like the chap who your purchased the rifle from was sailing very close to the wind, best leave the moderator with him and look else where. You could have a muzzle break made for you, there are plenty of first class engineers on the forums, no license would be needed and an aluminium muzzle break / weight would look identical to a moderator but obviously solid. I would personally submit a variation for a moderator due to H&S reasons. Most .22rf target ammo is near sub-sonic and the moderator will greatly reduce muzzle sound and blast. John Good reply hunter, a simple entry of 'hearing protection' under the reason for requiring a sound moderator, should be ample. Quote Link to post
jamie g 17
i did hear it was hard for target shooters to get mods years ago. but its ok now. you would think it would be better if the police did grant it. not only for peoples hearing safety. even though you have to wear ear defenders on a range. but also the people that live close to these ranges it would benefit them with less noise Quote Link to post
