Breed the best to the best, for what YOU want, and hope it does the job ! Try for the "Ultimate Dog", but there is no sutch thing as the "Ultimate Cross".

5/8 grey 2/8 bull 1/8 collie

will do absolutely anything you want from big to small

And how would you get that cross, bearing in mind that after the first cross there is no way of telling what percentage of what has gone where !

Yep  , too many folk are hung up on fractions, when performance is the key!

Ask 50 different people and you"ll no doubt get 50 different answers.

Type of land.

type of work, ie lamping, bushing, ferreting etc.

personal choice on size, coat, temperment.

past experience.

how can you know what the best is or what your favorite is with so many possibilities, you cant have tried/seen them all unless your either very very old or one of the many dog swappers who swap and change and run a different dog every week

i think the best question would have been what cross worked best for what you worked (remember this is a open forum, so no droppin yourselfs init  )

i aint had a workin dog in a few years that has really standed out apart from a little bitch i had.]

she was saluki colie whippet greyhound, looked like a thick set whippet ... but that was the best bitch i've owned but only ever tried her on rabbit ... did slip her on a bushy tail once but bushy was to close to the hedge.

the only fault i had with her was she wouldn't come straight back on the 1st 1 or 2 but soon came around after a couple of runs .... but i lived with that because she did what i wanted
