Hi there i have been reading a lot of the posts in here and i was wondering if anyone has crossed a pat with a running dog, if so any pictures and how do they fair as lurchers etc.

iv never seen one but i would think to slow for most things ecsept rats and to big to go to ground so just generally useless, may be a bushing dog

Surely it would be the equivelent of say a beddy cross??

I knew of a russell x whippet  which caught quite a few rabbits alongside the terriers. I reckon it would good for working hedges and bushes? :hmm: but then again it might be too big to fit through scrub and too slow to really pick bolters up? :( so you dont know till you try... :D

It wouldn't be the equivalent of a Beddy cross. A beddy is considerably longer and a bit taller than your average

Patt. A longer dog will always cover the ground quicker than a more cobby dog.

Now, although I don't own a Patterdale I'm under the impression they are less 'racey' than a Bedlington, therefore they must throw thicker set pups?

I've never seen a Pat/Whippet cross before, although a chap in my local pub had a staff/whippet and it was hideous - just like a small whippet body with a massive staffy head :o . By taking a larger built Patterdale (something nearing the size of a staff) wouldn't the result be similar to a staffy/whippet cross anyway?

Although I have to ask, why would you want to cross a Pat with a Whippet when there are many other crosses out there that do a better job?

Before crossing or breeding you have to look at why you would need such a cross or dog what sort of ground you are covering and what pack you have already

Having owned a beddie and numerous lurcher types my cousin has bred and worked pats for about 40 years

This cross in my opinion would be restricted to what it will catch for you bushed rabbits and rats and it is not going to be constructed properly to go to ground unlike the beddie which would do all that and more .

Looks mean nothing to me give me a butt ugly dog anyday that catches over a handsome emptybag
