what age should you start taking dogs beating

Recommended Posts

iv got 3 6month(i said in other post there 5month but these months are flying over carnt keep track) old cockers and i was guna take them beating this weekend, its been brought to my attention that there to young, what age will be best they listen to everything i say they dont stray too far away from me even if they do pick up a scent and as soon as i blow the whistle there at my ankles, just wondering if there an age or is it when you think there ready because at the end of the day you have to take them one day and when there young would that be best time to get them used to it, thanks in advance

Just out of interest, what/how much training have you done with them at 6 months??? i'm not starting any training with my springer pup till she's at least 6/7 months, then i reckon she's gonna be between 18 months and 2 yrs before doing any proper graft and that depends how her training goes, never had a cocker so dont know if they need things done differently?

Hi mate, me again.....Sounds like you are doing the basics correctly and i hope they all turn out to be wee crackers. We all want to get our dogs up to a standard where we can take them to shoots but pushing them wont help. Walking them in parks and stuff wont get them ready for shoot day, with lots of smells and mainly other dogs working around them will drive them wild. I thought like you that my 2 pups at that age were 100% on the recall to my whistle but as i said to you when i took them to that shoot a couple of weeks ago(aged nearly 1 year) the first bird that fell from the sky the wee b*****d was off......i whistled,he stopped and funnily enough in 12 long months it was the first time i had seen that "f**k you" look in his eyes....

They will go back at the end of the season, just for another look. I have just started dummy work with a launcher and signs are good.......if they turn out like there parents al be a happy man......atb

I would take one with you on the leed, if you dont think they will do a whole day leave them in your car for the rest of the day. they wont learn anything in the kennel, I start mine off as soon as, by one year old their spot on to work every day beating or picking up

My Labrador was doing great with training till about 7-8 month old when he suddenly became a teenage terror. We've been working out b*ll*cks off trying to get recall etc back since then. Just as he's turned 1 year old things are calming down again but he's still a handful.

I am no expert but I'd take your time and let em grow up a bit first.
