Marksman 934
Well guys, I ventured out on my own( Yes!...Thats right....WITHOUT my right hand man(Wor kid!)) last night for a few hours down to my local permission. Had a case of insomnia and couldnt sleep. I didnt wanna get wor kid out of bed as he had work and I took a days holiday so got the gear out the cabinet into the car and I was on the ground just after 0100hrs. The sky was open with a bright 3/4 moon and not a breath of wind. Every step sounded amplified as though I was walking over crisp packets/eggshells and thought my chances ofg actually getting in range of something to shoot would be very slim so I decided to do something I very rarely do and that was to "camp" outside a known warren and hope bugs showed their faces. Anyway on the way down the best vantage point I flicked on the lamp and saw a lonely bead in the distance, over 100m away down the field. I thought to myself this isnt going to work very well trying to stalk it over 100m so I just had a normal walk down the side of the field in cover of the hawthorn trees. I got just over 3/4 of the way down the field and flicked the lamp on again..... Bugs was still there....happily munching away ...Couldnt believe it!....The noise I must have made trudging through the field must have been like a herd of cattle on the rampage yet it didnt seem to bother it..... I estimated the range to be about 35-40m placed the holdover then let the lead fly with a silent "phhhhut" from the rifle. The telltale sound of lead hitting bone sent bugs up in the air to fall a metre away from where he was sat told the story, one in the bag Scanning the rest of the field there was nothing so I quickly made my way to the warren which lies under a large Hawthorn trees surrounded by brambles and lay in wait. The point I was shooting from is a small knoll at a lasered 30m as measured by wor kid so I knew that anything coming out of there would be well within range. I kept flicking the lamp on and off over the next 15-20 mins and still nothing showed but still I waited..... After about 40mins the dull red beam of the lamp picked up a couple of pearls just inside the brambles to the left of the warren so I dropped the light down till they were only just visible so as not to spook them. It didnt take long for them to feel safe and hop out 2-3m from the safety of the brambles and start munching. Slowly followed by another 2..... I had 4 targets now, all within range, which one was I going to take.... The biggest one...obviously! Turning up the brightness of the lamp so I could see the target area clearly through the scope I placed the crosshair on the rabbits brain and watched as it keeled over without even a twitch. 2 of the others immediately ran for cover but the other ran in the opposite direction into the middle of the clearing at about 40-45m and stopped standing up on it's back legs looking for danger.... Big mistake!! Quickly recocking and placing 2 1/2 mildots holdover on the rabbits head saw this one bowl over, but it was still jumping around, I charged towards it like a steam train and quickly dispatched it, I'd hit it in the chest, going to show it was actually further than I first estimated and probably needed more holdover. Never the less it didnt suffer. I hung about for another hour but nothing showed, not surprising really after me charging down to dispatch that rabbit I probably scared the cows back into the shed and the horses into the stables too! All in all 3 in the bag for 3 hrs! Cheers for reading! Darryl Edited November 1, 2010 by Marksman 4 Quote Link to post
