Killing range? AA S 200

Recommended Posts

Hi all.. not posted on this part of the forum before, though i often use an air rifle for Squirrels, Rats etc.

I am a fair sportsman, or would like to think i am and have often pondered over the effectiveness of my rifle for a fatal shot over different ranges/ distances.

I have a fairly basic understanding of the trajectory of a pellet in flight, though none or any of it's effectiveness at certain ranges.

In short.. I own a Air Arms S 200 in .22 and would be interested in any advice on what sort of range i would be safe in taking a shot for a kill.

I may add, that i have shot and killed out right, rodents and corvids at about 35 yards.. i have refused to squeeze the trigger at targets that seem out of range to my eye.

thanks for any advice.

hi buddy

you hit the nail on the head with your last sentence and good on for admitting it

"i have refused to squeeze the trigger at targets that seem out of range to my eye."

anyone worth there salt in this game will only shoot to there own ability and its only right they should most lads on here will agree most pcp's will out shoot there owner..from a point of view on your guns ability if its kept in good order and well maintained i would be happy at taken shots up to 45 mtrs some better shots may take it further

ive got an s200 in .177 and so far my best distance shot is 43mtrs

Welcome to the forum :gunsmilie: I admire your taste in Rifles :victory:

The question is not at what range can the gun deliver a fatal shot, because the gun can deliver a fatal shot at much further than you would imagine

The question is more what you are capable of making the gun do

I've hit bunnies out to 65 yards and they have dropped like a lead baloon (perfect conditions, no wind etc) but its not something I do regularly

My advice is; as always see what you can get the gun to do consistantly on paper! Try for a grouping of less than 1 inch at 35 yards, then increase the distance by 5 yards until you can no longer keep the pellets within the inch :gunsmilie:

As soon as you are out of that inch, you know that you are beyond your maximum range and your last set of 1 inch groups is your maximum range. Practice, Practice, Practice, and then practice some more.

Once you know what you can get it to do at ranges then you can think about shooting live quarry at those ranges.
