flight pond

Recommended Posts

Been feeding a pond now since august 1st and there has been plenty of ducks (all mallard) on there up until last week, were the total count was about 70 birds! But the last few nights numbers have dropped. With only about 15 or so tonight! what do you think it could be? over feeding? rise in temperature? as it was alot colder last week? It is not a large pond only about 12 x 6 meters. any suggestions ?????

could be a number of things, duck found better food, have you shot it ?, bit of water come down ? Keep feeding mate and build the numbers back up. If it was that easy it would be no reward, gotta earn the right to be out at the right time to shoot the birds.

i would say it was the moon but not 100% sure because i have not seen them flighting in to the pond, i can't see it being over feeding because mallard are greedy and will just eat ,eat, eat ...have they been taking less feed ? , has there been any tractors around flight time thats been working in the fields around the pond, could be fireworks , i have lakes on a leisure park where we shoot geese, ducks on ,come the start of october when the fireworks start going off , it moves them off and is no good to shoot again till mid december when things have quietened down ...

but like i said , i would put money on it being the moon , they still come but under the moon and you dont see them ...

let me know whats happening about the feed is the same amount still going or less

food still seems to be going!I went last night to see if there were any flighting in and about 15 came in and landed straight away. several minutes later about eight or so came in and kept circling and after a short while they drifted off . Then about ten minutes later the ducks on the pond took flight and headed off!! strange i thought??

very strange , how close where you to the pond could have been spooked by something, have a look around the pond to see if there are any bags that are flapping about ....

Ducks are very easily spooked  I have 8 in a shed and the other day a white bag dropped off the shelf in the shed on to the floor and they would not go back in at dusk and they are normally waiting in the shed for food.

I think this is a case of leaving them to long and letting to big a number build up. Despite their greed they are not fond of too much competition or over crowding and have moved on. The fact that you still have birds coming in and food going suggestd they have not been overly disturbed. My sugesstion would be to continue with what your doing but shoot once you have a lead in of 20 to 30 leave it a couple of weeks and shoot again if the food continues to go and numbers continue to build.
