Squirrel_Basher 17,100
Every year i get an influx of rodents of the norwegicus [spelling]variety due in all honesty to my place of storage for the fishing kit .It gets put away covered in groundbait from bream sessions and the keepnet was full of scales .The ground bait itself was put up on a shelf but still they got to it ,that was until time came available to get a few fenns out and payback has started . This was the first last wednesday followed by a double on thursday . One in a mk 6 fenn too .Today there another brace so doing something right . One was a contender in the long running thread' King Rat' that went 17 1/2 inches. Hassen to add this is nowhere near human habitation and i get a reduction in rent for doing it as im the only one out of 11 units that has any ongoing control despite several pest firms promising to get the lot in previous years :whistling:but leaving just as many for my traps .Good one Quote Link to post

Paul in North Lincs 15
 Where are they coming in from?.....Is it possible toproof the building against them? Quote Link to post
Squirrel_Basher 17,100
To be perfectly honest mate ,im not at all bothered by it and use the rats as a reason to run a few traps all year .If at any time they get out of control i shall think about rat proofing but until then its happy trapping . Squirrel_Basher 17,100
Caught this today and a first for me .The rat was unfortunately caught in a fenn mk 4 by the door but by his foot only and then dragged the fenn to another trap ,a mk 6 fenn and was killed as he sprang this one .The traps are 2m apart along the wall . I believe that he knew his days were numbered, saw the other Fenn and took his own life. Either that or he was fecking unlucky. Quote Link to post
Squirrel_Basher 17,100
Another this morning in a mk 6 Quote Link to post
Sighthound 49
What are you bating with? Quote Link to post
Squirrel_Basher 17,100
A sprinkle of breadcumb groundbait on each pan mate. Quote Link to post
Matt 160
Are you using tunnels? If not, that will explain the foul catch, and the fact that some of your earlier captures are around the belly. Fenns (both Mk4 & 6) must have a tunnel, not only to protect from non-targets, but more importantly so that the trap has a 'roof' to work against (Fenns throw their victims upwards, which is why they foul catch without a tunnel roof to work against). Squirrel_Basher 17,100
Totally understand mate .They are set in makeshift tunnels of brick with a timber roof .Maybe a bit tall ,well definately too tall for the mk4 but two bricks high is all i have to work with at the moment until i get time to fashion a few purpose built tunnels for the job . Is it a legal requirement to cover in a building though as i thought it was down to discretion? No non target species for sure although a stoat was seen last week and i have no desire to trap him although i feel it is only a matter of time with the fenns and the smell of rat on them . Good you picked up on the height thing though mate as anyone watching will hopefully get it right :victory:A few heights would be appreciated by novices im sure! Quote Link to post
Matt 160
Yes, it is a legal requirement to use tunnels with fenns, even when they are used indoors (as specified in the STAO). The reason for that is that the Fenn needs a roof to make it work humanely. The height of the roof needs to be just enough to allow the trap to work. Too high, and you will get foul catches. Good to see a few rats being caught FD - keep up the good work, but don't forget to leave a few for all the poor old Wiltshire pesties!!! Quote Link to post
