trappa 518
Im going to make some sloe gin and sloe vodka with sloes (obviously) but with ....... yew tree berries too!!! I know the seed is fatally poisonous but the berry flesh is fine, i really like the taste, so i reckon im going to give it a go. My main concern is whether to actually drop the berries in with the sloes, or just to get a good handful and squeeze out the juice and pour that in with the gin, sloes and sugar. In theory i think im favouring the first option but my worry is if i get drunk and pour a seed in to the glass which is why i will probably go for the second choice. Watch this space! Guest jt750
Better safe than sorry mate ...try putting 3 or 4 crushed almonds in instead ...personally i've never tried it but i hear from the old guys and gals round here its better than just the sloes
shepp 2,285
The gin could well leach the poison from the seeds so if the flesh is ok then I would squeeze and strain the yew berrys through some cloth.

trappa 518
Shepp, i never thought of that. I think i will either sieve it or cut the seeds out and drop the flesh in.

bert the fert 28
DO some damson vodka if your lucky youl still find some I were gutted at this years damson crop. They were just ready to pick, all fat, juicy and sweet....when we had really strong winds one night. I let the chooks out in the morning and when i saw them running round excitedly with beaks full of windfall damsons, i realised i'd lost virtually all of them. Still, the chooks were chuffed. Trappa, this gin recipe is sounding well scary. You'll have to be like one of them japanese chefs that cooks poisonous fish. Be careful, fer gawds sake
