Squirrel_Basher 17,100
Got invited to sit in a seat overlooking a plantation near the Marlborough Downs .Got there about 3.30pm and had a long ,long wait. The seat is on the edge of a large wood ,L shaped where i was so i was covering a V to my right and the plantation to my front with no veiw around my right hand corner but no matter .Saw 2 does early on wander through the plantation where it is sparse enough but nothing shootable until an hour before sundown or there abouts .A party of roe came out the wood to my right and at a good 200 maybe more and headed for the back of the plantation .5 does and a buck, but i could see they were passing me wide.As soon as they were out of veiw another deer caught my attention in front the trees to my right and only about 70 yds away .A buck with a nice bright set of twigs .Levelled on him and squeezed as he broadsided to which he just ran back in the wood .Ears straining for the crash but nothing so i gave him a few minutes before making the rifle safe and descending. At the spot there was a bit of paint but not what i expected .I had chest shot this beast at this range because it was a gift from a mate for something ive been helping out with and i didnt want any f**k ups with misplaced neck shots . Tracked him as best i could but the cover beat me to be honest as it was just a wall of bramble through which the buck had crashed and kept going .Nothing for it but to ring and explain to which a chuckle came back and "Ill get the dog".The truck arrived from the farm and the headlights picked out more does running off from the now dark clearing and out steps my mate and paterdale terrier .Id heard about this little dog but not seen it in action so lead them to the spot that i had left the rifle at just 20 metres away.Off the dog goes tail thrashing and it must have been a good 2 minutes before a single bark .We had the general direction so made in further down the wood with a torch where its clearer and another bark lead us to him and the buck ,deceased and about 40 yds in from where i shot it but in some rushes ,well hidden .Cracking little dog ,that im told goes to ground but can be called out as well . Alls well that ends well and a pint thrown in to boot .Cant beat it . Quote Link to post

cassshantia 16
good reading ,and spot on for the little terrier as they have to find in deep dark places so a bit of rough bramble is nothing for this great type of dog ,long live write ups like this ,suprises every day on this site what a credit Quote Link to post
