Electrolytes for your dogs?

Recommended Posts

I read something in a Darcy book the other day about letting your dogs have access to Electrolytes during the day prior to you working your dog. And had a chat with a traveller mate of mine a good while ago about the same thing. So now I'm curious as hell! How many of you lot use them? Where do you get them from? What age do you start using them? I try not to let my kids near them too often 'cause they end up like complete little sh*ts for the rest of the day/night so does it have the same effect on younger dogs? I dunno all seems a bit high-tech but if they work and I want to try them out, then what am I looking for?

Thanks, Sniffer

Used to use electrolytes on hard lamping nights, 40 plus runs, giving the dog a couple of drinks during the night, you can buy them off the internet or make your own, I used to use dextrol or similar, salt and potasium, mix 5% salt, 10% potasium to 85% dextrol, others may use other mixtures of similar salts, have used sugar water in an emergency but dont recommend it on regular basis.

Dioralyte does the job safe to use and get it from any chemist mate not expensive either.I asked the vet about this once cos i was curious about all this and the guy said he wouldnt recommend it unless its really needed cos it can cause problems due to the salt and sugar in it if used to often or to much i only use it if the dogs have ran really hard and look like the need it

people give it to horses when eventing its to rehydrate you can get it from any horse shop

Is the horse stuff the same as the dog stuff?

not sure if they contain the same stuff, as a horse sweats and a dog dosnt, so they might need different stuff... i use an electrotite powder, table spoon in their food every night, during the season. this keeps them hydrated which can only be a good thing. you carnt force a dog to drink like we can.

YOU CAN DRINK WATER 2 REHYDRATE AFTER HARD RUNNING BUT ELECTROLYTES REPLACE THE SALTS & SUGARS THAT ARE ALSO USED UP & AIDS YOUR DOGS RECOVERY. SOME ADVERTISED 4 GREYHOUNDS ARE A BIT EXPENSIVE BUT AS HAS BEEN SAID PLAIN DYOROLYTE CAN BE BOUGHT CHEAPLY ENOUGH & DOES THE JOB. SOME DOGS WONT DRINK IT SO I USE A BOTTLE WITH THE POP DOWN CAP THAT RUNNERS USE 2 PUT IT DOWN THEIR THROAT. GOOD LUCK.

If you know your going to run your dog hard that night then yes, i see the benifits but on ordinary outings, providing fresh driking water a few hours prior to running and taking water with you should be all you need.

I've been out with lads trying to squeeze a bottle of electrolite down a dogs neck every other run, to me it was doing more harm than good and i said so!

Elecrolyte should not be a every outing requirement. An expierenced, fit dog and a sensible owner know when... ;)
