KenKeeping 13
Ok guys. Ive got one ferret, he aint working at moment just keeping the Sal company as he grows up! So as far as exercise is concerned he gets lenty when chasing the Sal around the garden, lol. What do you recomend as an ideal amount daily, and when to feed him each day! He has fresh water in the hutch every morning. As well as his bottle on the wire! After I clean him out, while he and the Sal do their thing, I top up his dry food tray so there is always dry food available, and put his fresh in for when he goes back into the hutch! Hi either has a chicken leg, mug of fresh mince, liver, dog food on rare occations, anything that the Sal is having himself that day! But I am not shure as a complete ameture and being totaly nieve! How much I am supposed to make shure he has as far as quantity a day! He is quite a big lad so he is not starving by any means! Quote Link to post
Davidh 5
As long as you are feeding a complete food specifically made for ferrets, that will give him all he needs in the way of nutrients. Anything else is just to keep his diet varied. As regards amount just make sure he eats all fresh meat and remove anything which is uneaten, ajust amounts accordingly. Keep dry food topped up and make sure his water is always available and fresh. Hope this helps. Quote Link to post
KenKeeping 13
Thanks! Just didnt want to think that I was short changing him, lol. Quote Link to post
welshnutter69 78
i used to work in a dry food company for animals, we made ferret food and cat food all im telling u is, go for a good quailty cat food, its half the price and just as good mine are on it and come see if u could tell the diffrence, ferret food is a con DONT FEED IT TINNED RUBISH stick to either fresh meat as a treat, ie, rabbit ect, i give mine lambs heart and rabbits liver/heart as a treat... i try and make sure theres dry food in at all times for them 2 eat so thay can eat as much as thay like. this is my opinion, i got 2 hob ferrets and i work them every weekend... there solid, fit and full of energy Quote Link to post
Davidh 5
I must disagree. Dry cat or dog food has no got a high enough protein content. I know that dry ferret food is expensive but shop around and you can find a good deal especially if you can buy in bulk with others who keep ferrets in your area. Quote Link to post
welshnutter69 78
oh i agree there, do not feed them dried dog food, thats a no no, what % protine is ur ferret food? the car food i buy is breeder pack, its 32% Quote Link to post

Malt 379
I buy frozen chicken portions from the supermarkets when I haven't got any rabbit. They're only £3 odd a bag and one bag lasts my 3 jills a week. Better for them than that dried shite.. Quote Link to post

KenKeeping 13
Aladdin ain't started getting rabits yet, so I rely on my mates to bring them after they been out shooting! Chickens are a regular meal, as Aladdin has half chicken for breakfast with some dry food, so the ferret has a leg that the Sal cant eat. As I said before! Whatever Aladdin the Sal is eating, then the ferret gets as well! This dry food biz is where Iv'e gone completely wrong then. They are both having Wagg puppy dried food to nibble on all day, so I will have to go and pick up some propper stuff for the ferret tomorrow then. Thanks for the input lads, I knew Id'e probably be doing it all wrong! Shows how nieve I am. Quote Link to post

I agree with the dog food bit 100%. I'm right at the end of West Wales pal, closer to Ireland than England in fact! Thanks for the offer but I wouldn't feed fillets, I like them to have the bones too. I used to get chicken carcase from a local butcher, but I've moved now and need to find a new supplier. I wouldn't condone doing such a thing, but my dad used to keep seemingly healthy ferrets that lived to the age of 9 or more, on bread, milk and the occasional tin of budget cat food!
