feeding ferrets chicks

I know a man that breeds fancy chickens and only keeps hen chicks. They are sexed at 1 day old then if they are cockerals they are killed. He has offered me them to feed to the ferrets but im not sure what to do, would they be ok for the ferrets to eat, and how many a day would three ferrets eat roughly?

my ferrets have eaten chicks for years and love em...not sure how many to feed them though, i just give em a cock a day till they run out (normally about 5 days) but also put a handfull of buiscuit in too...

I get in big boxes of them and if feeding them i throw in at least a dozen a day between 6 ferrets and they go pretty much instantly.

Great scran for ferrets mate,Feed 4 a day for each if they eat it all feed 5 if they don't eat all feed less ,But I would strongly advise you to vary the diet.P1

there is next to no meat on a day old chick and a ferret has a short gut which means it needs to take in a lot of protein to keep its metabilism working correctly ... you would be ok feeding the chicks as an extra to their normal diet but not as their only meal ......

I'm in agreement on that one mate. They're okay as long as it's not their only food- it's basically an egg in feathers! Handy to keep a box in the freezer in case food ever get's a bit scarce though!

feeding chicks costantly can thicken the gullet (what ever that is) and can kill them so I have read and that they should be fed no more than once a week and like has been said already they dont contain very much nurishment.

I feed day olds to mine but only as a part of their diet. Once a week and depending on time of year 1 or 2 for each ferret although they just grab them and so you can't control who gets what.

Be careful when feeding poultry to ferrets lad I worked with poisoned his ferrets feeding them dead turkeys that had been on medication, one died and the others would not eat it again. A lot of poultry medication contains penicillin. Should not have a problem with day old chicks though.

See if you can get him to run them on for a week and then they'll be miles better for the ferrets, pay for his chick crumbs or something. A day old is basically a fluffy egg.

aye there just a egg covered in fluff never had a chance to build muscles etc and the fluff can irrate the ferrets throat

i put 15 chicks in with my 3 every other day but put biscuits in the other days with a bit of paste
