ginga john 268
As far as Big Lennie was concerned he accepted all comers, all offers and what ever "style" you wanted He even went to The states to fight and went on his own, i think there's something in a book about him that mentions it somewhere He fought Roy shaw three times, he won two and lost one, And he said that Shaw had the hardest punch he'd ever took Brian Bradshaw wasn't even a fight and the man was never the same after the three minutes he got after the nutting incident, and the visit to the hospital afterward As for Bartley Gorman he was a hard man among the tinkers of Ireland but didn't seem to have either the quality or quantity of opponent that the big fella had, my money would have been on Maclean all day long A good friend of mine shared some accomodation with Big Len, courtesy of Her majesty, just before they took him off to the hospital wing the poor sod was routinely jabbed up just to go near him as the screws were so scared of him There was some talk of the amount of drugs they gave him being a cause for the cancer he got A film of his life would be a bit of a whitewash as he was certainly no angel and at one time was more than a tad schizophrenic, whilst on the door of the Hippodrome !! Would still be worth a look though, the only problem would be finding someone with a neck like a bull and hands that were at least twice the size of a normal fella Maybe Darcy would be in with chance

Just to put things in order ginga john most of what you say is correct apart from the statement ive outlined above...Lenny was never anything near schizophrenic and certainly in the time he worked on the Hippodrome and Ronnie Scotts was a total gentleman and the perfect old time club bouncer,no not the trendy pretty boy " doormen " that are popular today Lenny could turn in a split second and it was never pretty when he did,but most times a look and quiet whisper in the ear was good enough...he was in great demand on doors which you dont become by being schizophrenic. As regards who he could beat and who he couldnt,Lennie was a great fighter but not a good boxer,he was simply too uncontrolled and didnt have the temperament to box, early on he applied to the british boxing board of control for a licence which they refused due to his record which was the main reason he started fighting unlicensed. To this day Lennie is still possibly the most powerful and explosive man ive ever seen fight, who knows what he could of achieved with the correct temperament and the correct conditioning and training. Guest clash
DW released a new version of his 1st book. In his words, mainly to put things right from the 1st book & to put the record straight on his very good friend. Mickey was his name & his surname don't come to me,at this minute. Anyway,he speaks very highly of Mickey & there is lots of incidents regarding most of the names mentioned in previous posts, including his opinion on why RS went down so quick in one of them shows. Anyone remind me on him,or better still, have any opinions on Mickey ? Plenty of opinions on DW,but the few i know who knew him very well, only speak highly. Very good read, the new book by the way. The majority of the " im a big hard gangster " books are 90% bullshit and 10% truth...the best thing Danny ever did was had one of the greatest dogs in England.....you have to ask yourself why any man who has earned a living from crime would wish to tell the general public about it,if they had been succesful at it they wouldnt need the desperate pennies a book would make would they An old pal of mine who did a book and featured in a tv program says it was the biggest mistake he ever made....a lot of folk told him not to but he knew best at the time, some things are learned too late ! Its all a load of ol bollocks aimed at the impressionable teenager market in my opinion.....you either keep your head down and earn dough or run around shouting your mouth off not earning dough ( but then make a book based on a reputation in your own mind ) In ol Lennies defence when he did his book nobody had really heard of those type of books and there wasnt a market for them like there is today.
