Brittany Spaniel

Recommended Posts

As some of you may remember i "rescued" if you like, a Brittany pup about 6 wks ago from a horrible house.

Well she is nearly 12 weeks now and fully jabbed up.

She is house trained, starting to understand the "sit" command, walks well on the lead and comes to her name like a good un.

I intend to rough shoot over her when she is older, maybe do some picking up and hopefully work her with my lurcher finding game.

Iv got some questions if anyone can help me out?

Iv ordered a 210.5 whistle....... fella who works springers told me thats what he uses.

Is that the right sort of whistle?

Is it possible for a mere mortal to train one dog to do the above tasks?

Is there an accepted list of whistle commands or does everyone use something different?

I shot on saturday and noticed two people working spaniels useing 2 pips to make their dog return.

am i wasting my time trying to train a Brittany?

Iv ordered a book by Joe Irving so maybe that contains the answers but untill it arrives i thought id ask on here... Cheers Daveo

Dave just take your time mate, I'm sure you will do well with her, that whistle is ideal, I use a long blow for the stop, double pip for a turn and repetitive blow for a recall.

None of this is needed for a while, you could use the recall one when your putting the dogs bowl out, associate the sound with someting pleasurable and instill a nice recall.

If you ever need books give me a shout and I will sort them out cheap for you, I have a few books around the place.

The key to the whitsle is to keep it nice and soft and quiet, aswell as your voice, dog will tune in more, that my advice...just wish I done it myself, Bloddy big mouth haha.

Get some pics up mate

Cheers matey, ill sort some picks out soon, she looks 100% better now IMHO.

The vet asked where she had come from i told her the state of the house and she said she could see it in the coat of the dog because she look scruffy.

I said you should have seen her the day i picked her up.... :icon_eek:
