wag 13
well me and a friend planned a night out on the rabbits thursday night with the .17HMRS , well we were in the middle of having one of our best nights ever , when something BAD happened , we just pulled into another grass field to shoot more rabbits , we pulled over to reload the clips up , now i opened up a new box of bullets and put 10 out the box into the clip of which holds 10 ...i then put the clip into the rifle as i have done a thousand times before nothing was done different ... we started off again lamping and one rabbit was picked out for me to shoot , so as i have done many times before i rested the rifle on the mirror and got ready to take the shot , i pulled the trigger and there was a deafening BANG and a big flash , i then felt a sharp pain in my right hand, also in my left upper part of my leg . my friend was also hit by bits of plastic , also he was deafened by the loud bang ... well after i had checked my pants , my hand and leg , we had a look at the rifle , we could see , what we thought at the time was the clip had just fell out but on a closer inspection of the rifle we could see that part of the clip was still in there , l pulled the bolt back to so we could have a look down the barrel and also look at the empty case that was fired .well the barrel looked ok aswell as the silencer, but the bottom half of the case had been split open ... we had a look around for the rest of the clip... some of which was stuck in my trousers and a little in my leg and some was still in the rifle , we had a good look around the truck , also outside too , we could only find some bits and none of the other rounds that was in the clip , so we dont know if they went off with it being such a loud bang ... we packed up and headed home and on friday i took my rifle to the local gunsmith to have a good look at it , he could find nothing wrong with it and gave it a good going over , i have since tried it again and all seems well but as you can imagine we shit ourselves ..... so i was just wondering if this has happened to anyone else , also should i be getting intouch with the ammunition company to make them aware that this has happened using their bullets ..... i was told it could have been a double drop of powder in the case when loaded but i have no idea , so any advice would be great ... what the clip should look like what it looks like now with the bits we found the 2 together the empty case fron the rifle Quote Link to post
Blacksheep 6
Nasty !! What make of Ammunition was this ,i have had quite a few Remingtons with a small split after firing . Quote Link to post
mattydski 560
I would definitely let the manufacturer know WAG, I would be concerned about the rest of the batch as well. I am not sure whether there would be room in the case for an extra powder charge though??? Until it is resolved , buy a different batch mate. Quote Link to post
wag 13
Nasty !! What make of Ammunition was this ,i have had quite a few Remingtons with a small split after firing . it was winchester ammunition , i also have had splits down the side of the remington cases , that was one of my main reasons going onto using winchester , but i'm now thinking of going back to remington...... i also forgot to say it has bent the guard a little where the clip fits into the rifle , i would hate to think how bad it could have been if it had been a metal clip .... Yes I can imagine mate how you must feel. one of the hawks hit me in the face last year and missed my eye by about 1/4 of an Inch, its the third time I have been hit in the face but this was a bit close for comfort! I'm now like yourself and very weary when I recall a bird incase it over shoots the glove and nail me full in the face.. I remember that gun being pretty lethal! I'm sure in time you'll feel more confident with it, although it will always be in the back of your mind. Jasp Quote Link to post
SNAP SHOT 194
lucky escape mate, But i'm sure you couldn't drop double into the case, i'd say faulty brass maybe???? i was thinking of maybe a squib round until i read on.... i defo wouldn't use any of the other rounds or batch no's and send them back to the factory.... also get in touch with the maker and state what happened in detail, they can trace the batch to time of manufacture and see if the machines had stopped, ATB. danebrewer10 6
I really don't understand how this happened, if the bollt was closed how would that affect the magazine? I'm struggling here, was it the chambered round that when fired caused this or one in the magazine? as for the cases splitting, that has nothing to do with the different manufactiurers, it's puely down to the manufacturing process, when they draw the case out from a disc, they put the priming compound in the case rim before they create the shoulder to accept the bullet, subsequently they can't anneal the case to relieve the stress caused by forming the neck as they'd set off the priming compound. the stresses in the case, and the fact that it has been work hardened, means that the case can not stretch as much, before it cracks, it's totally safe and is (i have noticed) does not seem to affect the accuracy though I wouldn't like to say for sure.
