Australian Cattle dog!

Recommended Posts

Nice pics of your dogs WR. Thanks for posting them.

How do you find them as workers?

Is their a true working strain in the uk, of Australian cattle dogs?

Or, does it look like the only workers are in Oz?

The original lurcher line in 1993 were bred from a blue ACD from pet/show stock, the lad that bought the pup worked it with his lurchers, mainly hunting up, it did lamp but never had the speed, the first crosses would catch daytime rabbits and lamped well, and when legal deer and foxes.

They can be strong willed, protective but are hardy, strong, good feet, good nose, trainable, they will not suit some lurcher people but i have had nothing else since 93, the little red one came from wales she is ACD X WHIP/GREY, she is only 21inch but very strong boned, I only mooch and ferret now and they suit me, they do not have blinding pace but fast enough, if you want a flying machine then not for you, but suit me and my type of work.

All the best.WR

The most affectionate ,loyal, intelligent bitch I've ever owned .cattledog pup.bmp

obedient cattle dog.bmp

and athleticcattle dog jumping on shed.bmp

BUT not without certain funny little ways which might not make the cross everyone's cup of tea !!!

As mentioned there have been a couple of great threads on the subject already .

Well, i am more than happy with my Half Cross......

Mine is fine around other people and dogs BUT, DIFFERENT BALL GAME WHEN HE IS BACK ON HOME TURF...... they have a real strong guarding instinct

My Half Cross is quite quick for a Half Cross but, a Rabbit on FAST GROUND has him well beat.... just lacks that extra gear.

Use him mainly for Ferreting and Lamping so, he suits me down to the ground.

I am not sure if all ACD's and there Crosses are like this????? but, mine from a Young Age has had an obsession with water..... Sea/River/Lake/Pond/Puddle..... HE HAS TO BE IN IT :doh:

Back in the 80's, i seen on tv, Phil Lloyd, working a 1st cross acd Speckle, ferreting and i liked her, she was fairly fast i thought. It was a documentry, on pest control i seen, but can not remember what it was called?

I have never thought about it after that, untill browsing You-tube and came across acd.

Lost my bitch not long after the last pic was taken when she was nearly 11 months, she was the litter sister to caterpillers dog.She herself had plenty of speed for a 1/2x and had a good few rabbits,a few long ears as well as a few cwd under her belt, all retreived within the law.Likes been said not everyones cup of tea as they do need work/mental stimulation/some way of letting off steam and brain power or else they can make life hard work for sure, they are dog which does command a little extra work but they sure are worth the effort :notworthy: .
