Airgun lamping

Recommended Posts

Hey,

Been reading these forums for last few weeks, some good reading, just signed up now. :)

First post is a long one, Skip to end for quick short question if want.

Anyway, Ive owned a Wierauch 97k for a few years now,was a present, but never really done too much with it.

Recently i've been doing a bit more shooting. The area i go to, Hillsides around a quarry/landfill are covered in Rabbit droppings. Seen a couple out during daytime also.

Waited till it was getting dark one night too see, and sure enough, couple of rabbits started coming out. Fox +darkness ruined that night though :\

So,I done a bit of reading and decided to try out lamping, Sounds like a good time.

I done a fair bit of reading on which lamp to buy, And decided to go with a Ledray Scope mounted torch.

Narrowed it down to these-

http://www.deben.com/gun-lights/tracer-ledray-tactical-400.html

Bit costly for what i had in mind i thought

http://www.deben.com/gun-lights/tracer-ledray-gl4-gun-light.html

http://www.deben.com/gun-lights/tracer-ledray-gl2-gun-light.html

Decided on the Gl2. From what ive read, Not much worse than the Gl4 and bit cheaper.

So, on Friday, i went to Gunstore near where i work. Asked if they had the Gl2 in stock. Was told they used too, but now sell SMK TactLed 100 meter beam instead, as they had compared them and SMK was brighter and cheaper.

I had a good look in the shop, seemed much the same, so i went for it. It was £38.

Smk TactLED

http://www.huntingandmilitarystore.co.uk/tactled-flashlight-torch-for-scope-by-smk-2244-p.asp

I got home, fitted it onto gun, then tried out the pressure switch. Very very very sensitive. So much so that i could wobble the cable about and it was going off. Just seemed too sensitive. Plus it kept staying on after i let go :\

Decided just to use the button switch instead, No big deal.

Took it out that night as a torch for walking dogs. Very bright, very happy.

Today, decided to have a look at the pressure switch again.Turned it on and off a few times, Switch still no good, torch still bright. Then I turned it on/off again, but this time the torch was really dimmed, not much good for reading books even.

I tried the button switch instead, Still very dim.Messed about with the batterys etc incase,Still very dim.

I had to leave it a while and go do something else. Came back anyway, messed about with batterys again. Turned it on, and back to full brightness it was again. I hadnt changed anything apart from take batterys out etc a few times.

So, about 7pm, Decided to go have a shot at the rabbits. I gave the torch an occasional check on the walk, still full brightness. After maybe 10 minutes walking (Live in countryside) checked again, Very dim :(

I took the batterys out again, put them back in, Nothing, No light at all.

So, annoyed, I walked back home, took the torch mount off my gun, repacked it all and will be taking it back to shop next week. Ive had a go at the batterys again, Managed to get it back to very dim light again.

Now, what i need is a recommendation.

I know you get what you pay for, and i have suffered from it it seems.

Should i go for the Ledray tactical 400 £129, Pricy but comes with charger etc, and hopefully is quite good quality,And dont mind paying that really. 170 meter beam just seems bit overkill for what im doing.

Or

Go for the GL2 Ledray 90 meter beam , Which from what ive read is quite good, and hope is better quality than the smk one? £55 and need to buy charger, £25

Has anyone used these and can recommend either or have another suggestion?

Will mainly use for Rabbits or rats, Know a place with lots as has been recommended by someone, Just need to get round to going and seeing the owner.

Hello and :welcomeani: to the forum.

I've not seen the SMK lamp yet.

There is a link on this thread (post number three) it is the one I've been using last year and this year and its not let me down yet :gunsmilie:http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/168432-rifle-lamps/

Cost half the price of the Ledray and almost identical specifications apart from it delivers twice as much light to wherever you point it.

I can light up my paddock from one side to the other lengthways and see bunnies in the far corners (about 100 yards).

I got it on a recomendation from a fellow hunter, I have not been dissapointed :gunsmilie: I now recomend it to others and so far no one has been dissapointed.

You can search eBay and find them complete with everything for about £20-25 inc charger and batteries.

Or you can get them seperately. The charger when purchased seperately cost about £5-6 and usually comes with 6 spare batteries.

Regarding the Dimming and brightning of the torch, thats down to the batteries needing charging. When they go down the LEDs go very dim in a few seconds, leave it off for a few minutes then turn on again and it gets brighter for a few seconds.

The torch came with 2 brand new batteries non-chargeable types,Lucky if torch has been on constant for 30 mins, so unfortunately i think its just a dodgy torch :\

Thanks for the link to the ebay torch,Looking a likely choice.

Question about the pressure switch though. How sensitive is it? The smk one, my finger just brushed against it and it would go off,Plus putting a bit of double sided tape on it to stick it to the stock set it off. Just seemed too sensitive :|

Will take my torch back this week and hopefully get the money back, Hopefully get the new one, whichever i choose, delivered for next weekend.

Thanks for the link,

It appears to be basically the same torch  only mine has one flat face on it and is called "UltraFire" and its half the price!

I generally get a good long time out of the rechargable batteries maybe three or 4 outings, but as the temerature drops, the rechargable batteries don't like it too much, so I always take spares and swap as and when needed. Once the cold pair are warmed up again in my pocket, they work fine again.

Please not that the advert says "UP to 7 hours" on non rechargable batteries. This would depend on the age of the batteries, and whether they are a decent make or just a generic cheap set.

My pressure switch is fairly sensitive as it has multiple micro-switches inside the rubber pad.

I found at one point it became very sensitive, but I narrowed it down to a loose wire (Part of it was making contact with the other side of where it had been soldered to the board). Eventually; (because the wires are soooo very thin) I replaced the entire wire with something a little more substantial (speaker wire) and it seems to work well and can withstand the amount of abuse I give it.

All the best

depends how far you want to go into it

Both wor kid and myself use the Deben Tracer Max with a dimmer switch fitted, and theyre cheaper than the price of the Ledrays etc

OK, so theyre a big lump to have on the rifle size wise, but they weigh practically nothing.

one of the best purchases I've made mate, fully recommend them

Well, Took the smk back to the shop today.

Shop Guy had a look at it, it gave a few seconds of dim light, went out, then wouldnt come back on at all.

He tried new batteries in it, Same problem.

Said he would order me in the Deben Gl2 to replace it and knock the price down a bit,Ordered the charger while was there. Gonna go back on Friday probably to pick it up.

Was nice and easy, No fuss, Good shop :)

Unfortunately im just back from a trip to a chicken/duck/firework selling place (odd combo?), Had been told it was absolutely full of rats. Spoke to the guy there, Was told they had tried a new poison and gotten rid of them, So wont be needing the torch for that then :\

Thanks for the other torch recommendations though.

Glad you got sorted mate. Shame about the permission, but as a professional pest controller, I'd be interested to hear more of this "new poison" they've tried!

I never really heard him properly, sounded like he said something about 2nd or 1st generation. No idea, Didnt hear that part too well.

Hopefully find somewhere else though, gotta love blasting the rats :)
