andy s410c 61
Depends on the ground your working..i know one fella on here who loves the spade & he can dig a rabbit out just as quick as a one that bolts on certain parts of his permission. However for me i,m normally looking at a 4ft plus dig 8/10 times which in the quarries i work is no good....too many limestone slabs so i work jills with a hob to shift them on if their arsed up.Don't get me wrong i will dig but it's a last resort job for me most of the time....but there's a couple of lads on here who've seen me on the blade on a rare occasion . At the end of the you'll draw your own conclusions on what suits your ferreting best....as it's the same for all of us Quote Link to post

The one 8,493
I dont like digging but some day i feel like a gardener with all the digging and just a few rabbits next day they might all fly out and i wont touch the spade swings and round abouts of the game .But if i do hit big roots ,stones i will dig at a angle and go round them ive been held up for a hour or two but always got there . Each to there own but i see no point in telling a landonwer you will control the rabbits if your no digging them out and checking the burrows are clear .Theres always newbies chapping on doors and nobody is irreplaceable Quote Link to post
jf1970 328
nice to see what the rest of you all think on this, as i said before i don't mind digging now and again and was just wondering if this was out of the ordinary, but after reading all your reply's it seems that he is doing his job well, i have never had to dig to deep either, the deepest i think is about 3ft and i have pulled out a rabbit every time so i suppose i can't complain,cheers......john. j davies 8
i think you might need to change your ferreting tactics if you have to dig every time.. obviously we all somtimes get one in a stopend, but i never dig, i just wait until the feret gives up and comes back.. mak sure the ferrets fed, just not too full, set your nets after youve approached QUIETLY.. dont talk, then walk away for ten mins, and if you can, net up another warren.. then, go back and enter the ferret and if youve been quiet enough and dont smellmof aftershave or deoderant etc, you should increase the chances of most bunnys bolting. If the ferret is down a while, and you want to move on.. try either banging a bunny at the hole to attract it, or if youve not caught yet, rattle a stick inside the hole, then when fitch arives, have some meat to attract him out.. hope this helps a bit, but NO, DO NOT GET RID OF A GOOD FERRET, JUST ENCOURAGE YOUR METHODS... A FERRET THAT IS ALWAYS DUG TO, WILL LEARN TO STAY.. DEPENDS WHAT YOU WANT. yes i do what you do the dogs get the rabbits in the holes i net them stay away for 30 min and go back very quiet never have this problem. and its a small hob to so the rabbits should be getting away and out its al time Quote Link to post
