Is it true you can only (legaly) buy sub-sonics with an open ticket?

presuming you mean .22lr and have a condition for expanding ammo then no it is not true

An FAC in England and Wales cannot specify ammunition other than "expanding" for live shooting. If your FAC is target only, you cannot buy expanding ammo. If it is for vermin and/or deer, you should ask for expanding ammo to be specified. Bullet weight, MV and ME do NOT go on the ticket. There are rules about minimum ballistics but these are separate from your FAC. Different in Scotland I believe, but still no rules about subs for .22lr.

Easy this one NO! that's not true, however if your fac is for approved range use only, then it's a problem because all sub's have expanding bullets (missiles)

and by definition you can't buy them / don't need them for target shooting.

If you are shooting over farmland for vermin etc, then even if you don't have a sound moderator you can buy all or any of the ammo your shop

has in its 'cupboard', so from Subsonics to Stingers and Yellow Jackets you can have anything you like!
